Cheatsy koopa's castle

Postby Catskart » Thu May 01, 2014 3:27 pm

A level about a medieval castle, a level with somethings special in the begin and the end.
It's the first time I use lunadll in my level, awesome this extention ! =P
I used it for the timer and the Cheatsy's HP, however, you must have the version 1.3.0.1 with lunadll.

It can be played in star game mode.

Why the hell do we need an SMBX 1.3.0,1.exe thing if we have it?

IN CASE PEOPLE DON'T HAVE IT, they can quickly download it here. The level has a timer, like Catskart said, and people who don't have this might find this useful. Nobody said you'd need to re-download it.

Cheatsy Koopa Castle by Cartsak

Atmosphere 7/10: The level’s entering was really innovated. I must say this wasn’t expected from you Cartsak. The GFXs was truly beautiful and well used. The level decorated with the finest BGOs and had a great looking tileset too. The level was mainly SMB3 styled, but there were some unfitting GFXs I must pint out. The SMB3 Koopas and Goombas don’t fit a castle like that. Same with the Piranha and the SMB3 Coins. You should the NPCs used in 8-6 Penultimate Palace from SMSE. The music in other hand was good, but I feel it should’ve been replaced with something else. And the boss fight didn’t have so you should fix that too.

NPC Placement 7/10: The NPC Placement was okay, but it was sometimes really unfair. Sometimes enemies was packed into small groups which made really hard to dodge and sometimes enemies didn’t appear that much so it had kinda a weird NPC placement :/

Gameplay 8.5/10: This level had some really fun and pretty good. The gimmick used in Section 2 was really innovated. It was great idea to trick the player. Haven’t seen that before in SMBX. The Purple Coin idea was also pretty cool, but it wasn’t much into it. One of the challenges I also liked was falling blocks in the third section. This level had innovated ideas, but the boss fight was really boring, not only cause of the length, but also it wasn’t that fun. So you should really improve that.

Level Design 8/10: Not sure if I should call this level linear or puzzle, but it kinda a mix of both of them which was a really clever idea. The design was really fun and pretty enjoyable. I really liked the start and the ending of the level. Good job

In total you're getting 8/10. A really good level. Fix the stuff and I'll re-review it.

Like a few other people in this thread are saying, the boss fight could definitely use some work. I must say, though, the rest of the level looked and seemed to play pretty good! I really liked the background and tileset used, especially, as well as the 3D effect in the start and end.

But let's go back to the boss fight. I have an idea for it that might interest people; What if the fight was something like the fight with Ludwig in New Super Mario Brothers Wii? I can certainly see it fitting in, as that fight was grand, which would fit the grand sort of theme that's going on with the castle.

On a slightly nitpicky note, the grammar in the text boxes could use a bit of work. But personally, I don't think it really needs it, as the bad grammar kind of reminds me of a badly-translated Japanese-originated game. (I'd make a joke about Zero Wing here but I don't think that meme has been relevant for years, so yeah.)

All in all, good level. You put a lot of work into this, and it shows!
