Pointless Features in video games

The title says it all. I'll start:
  • "Easy Mode" in the Sega Saturn game collection: Sonic Jam*
  • Achievements in ports on the Xbox 360/One

*Trust me, this "Easy Mode" in the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy is very pointless imo.

Unlocking additional character/s after beating all levels.

Yeah because after completing a game you feel bored of it sometimes, then you dont use the new characters that much. But literally this doesn't happen only with characters, some other things that you can use in the games too.

And I think the Geometry Dash Robot is a bit pointless because it's almost the same as the square. You can do high jumps with it but with the square works with an orb or a spring

Absence of scores.

(YI and SM64 would be even cooler with scores.)

My thing is the scoring system in the 2d Mario games, I don't think they make much sense because it's a platformer, not a competition to see who can get the highest score in every single level (unless you do that for a living which is kinda a waste of your life tbh). The only way I could see scores having some effect on the game is if you score high enough you get a bonus, like an extra life or something, but other than that I can't think of much else.

This might just be a little pet peeve of mine, Idk.

Absence of a feature is not a feature. It's development time spent elsewhere.
Though for the purposes of semantics I suppose the absence of score in particular turns YI and SM64 into "pointless features" (featuring mario) in video games.

YI and SM64 both attempt a kind of scoring system to drive replay value but they do it differently. In SM64 the game racks up your coins as your high score, in YI you have red coins, flowers and stars that add up to give you a score at the end.

Not everyone can play videogames well!

I've already seen games that can't be played until the end if you select easy mode. I don't get that, if you will do that, why even bother allowing someone to play on easy?

You really want proof about "Easy Mode" being 100% pointless in the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy in Sonic Jam? Here:

P.S. the YouTube video's nicely made, but seriously, play a port of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 that has Ring Keeper mode* to prove my point!

*Example: SEGA AGES: Sonic 1 on the Switch

I've seen games that have a lot of difficuty levels which I think is pointless because there's too few difference between one and other (like "Very Hard" and "Ultra-Hard"). Do you not think it's enough with just an "Easy", "Normal" and "Hard" difficulty?

BUMP!

I'm gonna allow discussions about video games with pointless characters in this thread, since characters counts as features.... But in all seriousness, Ill tell y'all 2 characters that are very 100% and unnecessarily Pointless in my opinion:

  • Dan Hibiki (From the Street Fighter series)
  • Delphi (From the Nintendo mobile app, Dragalia Lost)
