Gamers

Isn't there something pretty weird about creating an identity around a commodity? And unlike other products and stuff people get caught up in, games are a system of incentives and rewards so there's the whole issue of how that is used for or against people. Then there's the whole "video games are art" and simultaneously "video games are sports" arguments seeking the relevance of the "gamer" identity and role in society which is a whole other issue.
Are "gamers" pernicious or pointless?
