Flamethrower NPC?

In the level editor, under SMB3 "NPC Blocks", there's a flamethrower block beside the Bowser Statue that was used on Airships and in NSMB's final castle. How do I make this function properly?

Conventionally, you can't, it's just an object in the level. But using custom graphics, layers, and events, it's possible to create real ones:

What you do is put the blocks on the Default layer, but put the flames on their own layer. Then, make events that hide and show the flames every few seconds (using the Big Fireball sound during their appearance for added effect).

If you make it have the sound, wouldn't it play even in sections without the flamethrowers?

Yeah, but if you have one in each general screen area, the sound still makes sense.

Just so you know, the barrel thing isn't a a flamethrower in SMBX, it's just a barrel. You can interact with it like a solid block, though, and it can be moved by conveyors and the like. It's meant to be used as dead weight, as shown in the original Invasion.
