What type of music do you use in your level? Personally, I dislike music from recent games in SMBX levels because it doesn't fit with the game. I prefer SNES-synthesized music in my levels. Super Mario All-Stars, the game from which SMBX borrows most of its elements, uses SNES-produced music and I feel like modern music ruins the feel of the level.

When it comes to choosing music for my SMBX levels, I usually don't look for how the AGE of the music fits to my level, but how the ATMOSPHERE of the music fits to my level (for example, Nimbus Land clearly won't fit to a lava level). I usually use the music that SMBX provides me, but when it fits, I like using music from other games, too. I already used music from Yoshi's Island, Yoshi's Story, Monkey Island and New Super Mario Bros. Wii and it never felt like it didn't fit.

I typically don't use music from Mario games at all; I find an epic theme composed by a YouTuber and use the YouTube to mp3 converter. It's actually quite lousy to use a theme used before in another SMBX level, I think, so I try to keep it different. At the most, I might use a theme from a Donkey Kong Country game. I've used Kirby themes quite a bit, one Sonic theme, and one time ever I decided to use a Mario theme. It was from Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, and was modern. Also, I criticize default music, and I'm not the only one; castlewars does it too. For instance, if someone made a Metroid Cave level and used the default SMB1 underground theme, I'd take a lot of points off, and if it's a nostalgic SMB3 level and it uses the default SMB3 grass theme, I would take a few points away too. I felt like I was strict when I was a level judge, I'll tell you that, particularly with music choices.
SNES themes seem too dull and bland in levels; even if it's a "run and jump kill the Goombas" level I find it too boring; if you used hardcore metal song music it would be too loud. Therefore, I can't discover a way to find decent music picks in my level unless it is not too old, was not used before in SMBX, not too bland, or not too hardcore.
Anyway, I agree with smwforever45, too. The atmosphere of the music is indispensable, because it kind of determines the level's quality if that makes any sense. If you made a grassland music and used an OCremix of the SMB1 classical castle, that is poor level quality. I have to judge a level by its music, and it's a common habit with SMBX. I just can't help it.

I use whatever music I think would sound right in the level, and sometimes certain remixes catch my attention.. If my level is a volcano, chances are I'll be using my favorite volcanic theme, which was the one from NSMB. If I'm in a factory or research laboratory, I'll probably find a techno song or remix that works.

I'm fine with most kinds of music, although my pet peeves in that department are remixes that are so wildly different that they remove what I liked about the original, usually in the form of squeezing as much volume as it can into every second. That, and on rare occasions I'll find a level that uses something that sounds like it came from a movie, and that's just on another level entirely in a way that feels completely detaching from the gameplay. I don't put too much importance in music, though. It does matter to me whether it fits, and I'll point it out if need be, but I'm still able to enjoy the design, graphics, and gameplay as they're intended even if the music feels off.

I'm musically inclined. I always notice music in games and levels, so it bothers me if it doesn't sound like it belongs.

I have a high tolerance for variation. It can be 8-bit; it can be orchestrated; I don't mind. Whether or not it fits is a highly subjective guessing game to me. I don't disagree that it's great when it sounds SNES rendered, but in reality you can't always just reverse engineer a song and recreate it with that style, nor can you wait for someone else to if they haven't done it already. I just tend to see SMBX as being separate from the SNES era even though it draws inspiration from Super Mario All-Stars.
On the other hand, music that takes up less space seems to load faster and loop a lot more easily, and that's a HUGE plus.
Some things that DO concern me are if I've heard it too many times in other levels I've played, or if the repetitiveness of the music matches the natural length of the level.

I'm a sucker for music from the Super Mario Galaxy series. I also enjoy music from The Legend of Zelda, but not as much as SMG.
Certain music tracks start to get repetitive, such as the more recent ones from Super Mario 3D World that everybody seems to enjoy using in their levels.
Music that fits to the level environment and graphical style really does do it for me. There are specific music tracks, like ones from Kid Icarus Uprising, that don't belong in any SMBX level.

I don't suppose you remember Genaric SMB3 Airship, do you? You scored it a perfect 9 out of 10, that's not strict at all.

I focuses on whatever fits the environment, and what sounds nice. I personally avoid remixes however, as they don't really fit for a level. Though in some cases I pick the music first and eveeything else is envelloped around that. I reckon that could be quite a good approach if used well.

I usually take music from SMG, Kirby or 3D World.

I like use NES, SNES, N64, GBA and remix musics from this classics on specials levels. In my actual project, i'm using SNES, N64 and GBA musics, and the Hotel Mario soundtrack. Really, i use any type of music, this can include not-game musics. I use a music that i know and that combine with my level. For example, a Arcade World (i'm making in my project) i go use Waluigi Pinball music (from Mario Kart DS). However, exist a remix of the SNES in Youtube, and i like to use this. Conclusion: I like all type of music.

My choice of music is from any game really, as long as it fits with the theme of the level. Though I've been lazy about looking for songs from random games so I've just been using songs from Touhou or from games that practically everyone knows about really.

I stay away from using 8-bit music whenever given the opportunity. It's horribly out of place when it comes to SMBX, even with 8-bit graphics, because the sound effects are 16-bit.
As for the game I use it from, I tend to stay faithful to Mario because SMBX is definitely a Mario game, but out-of-place music such as music from Call of Duty or something won't fit much due to the platforming nature of many of the levels. I do tend to get more epic with the boss battle music when it gets closer to the bosses, so usually the first boss music is something like a regular boss theme before progressing to something like a champion theme from one of the Pokemon games as the theme for the final boss.

A mix of games, remix quality, and theme. I don't use Nes music unless it is a nes level. However, if I do, I look for a remix. I take music from various Youtube videos and convert them using this: http://www.vidtomp3.com/

For my earlier projects, I used sometimes NES, mostly SNES and like average something like at the Super Mario Galaxy era or something into that direction.
As for now to my newest Project, Touhou Music and only a few, SM64 Music.
