I wrote and drew this comic thinking of it as the introduction to a nonexistent video game called Birdo’s Quest.
I almost formatted it that way too, but decided to release it as a comic instead.
It's seven pages; enjoy!
(If anyone ever does create a Birdo's Quest video game, feel free to contact me to get the original art from this comic to use.)
Also, here are the character designs from a ROM Hack I started (but didn't finish) which replaces the characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 with those from the classic animated film The Thief and the Cobbler (which I restored as The Recobbled Cut).

So that's why we don't see many Pink Birdos. Nice comic.

I thought Birdo's Tale was commissioned, not your idea?

A lot of my work is commissions, but in the case of Birdo's Tale, I just really wanted to make a comic about Birdo. SMB2 is my favorite NES game, and a lot of its characters are underused. The Satellaview game provided the right reference for Wart, the King and Commander, and the general art style. For the Doki Doki Panic family I sort of had to go my own way.
Doki Doki Panic is a little less refined than SMB2/USA. They fixed and improved a few things here and there. The family have that Nintendo charm, though. I'd like to have drawn their monkey and the twin babies.

Redrawn sprite animations of Mr. Gimmick (Yumetarō), at four times his original size from the 1992 NES/Famicom game by Sunsoft. (Gimmick! ギミック! Gimikku!)
Certain emulators, like HiSMS (Sega Master System) and HDNES (Nintendo), allow the graphics in 8-bit video games to be replaced by HD equivalents at 2X or 4X size. I thought I'd redraw Mr. Gimmick to show what a remake could look like.
Wart (Mamu), redrawn at four times his NES size from Super Mario Bros. 2/USA (and Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic).
Birdo (Catherine), redrawn at four times her NES size.
It'll require some tweaking to put different heads on different bodies, but this covers her actions in Super Mario Bros. 2/USA. I've also included some walking and jumping frames to make her semi-playable, replacing the player character in either the original game or Super Mario Bros X.
I've previously drawn a seven-page comic about Birdo, which you can read here:

Didn't Sednaiur make 2x size sprites for most SMB1, SMB2, SMB3, and a few SMW NPCs?

Apperantly in Doki Doki Panic there were 2 females while in SMB2 there are 2 males 1 female and 1 mushroom. What a twist this shows.

I checked Sednaiur's SMB2 sprite pack, and spotted a large boss of Phanto, as well as 2X versions of Phanto, the Shyguys, Snifit, a flying variation on Pidgit, Porcupo, a cherry, radish, red coin and mushroom block.
That's all I saw there though.
Terrific graphics work by Sednaiur, really expanding SMB2's world.

There's a giant world GFX pack on Knux forums.

Oh, I see it!
http://knuckles96.prophpbb.com/topic13446.html
I like the colors and accuracy to the All Stars versions. They really fit in with SMBX. I'd like to see my drawings given that sort of color treatment! At an enlarged size, you really want to add detail and make them look like cartoon versions seen in official art at the time ... but not without losing that 16-bit color and feel.
