You have probably heard a lot about video game addiction in the news, with more recent cases associated with children on Fortnite, and how governments are aiming to deal with this.

Do you think video game addiction is a major problem currently? Do you believe governments should regulate the habits of gamers (I.E how long they play per day)? Are the media covering this topic well, or is it all just BS? Do you think 'Gaming Disorder' is a real thing?

In my opinion, the addiction to the video games is a big problem actually.

And honestly, I never have been addicted to a video game because I don't dedicate too many time to them. Also, when I usually play video games, I am pretty varied.

I don't think an addiction to video games should be compared to something like an addiction to drugs, it's more like an addiction to your favorite food or binge watching a tv show.

There is substance-based addiction as well as non-substance-based addiction. In theory every human activity can degenerate into addiction. However it's surely obvious that the subject of video gaming is prone to exaggeration and hysteria by outsiders; what everyone needs to understand is that intensive consume and emotional bonds don't already make an addiction. There is also not really an addiction already if you sometimes check new posts within just minutes or randomly browse the internet. I'd say that our habits of using smartphones are morally questionable and subtly harmful for our living together; but still that's not an addiction in my book. One could also argue that younger individuals are "more prone to addiction" but I'd rather say that's a matter of maturity. Addiction means withdrawal symptoms and dependance which grows so much that it seriously disturbs your life. Granted there are cases of compulsive gaming and gaming addiction, but these will always mark an exception.

I think that addiction happens when the activity makes you way happier than everything else, i admit that i am addicted to spending a lot of time daily on smbx and the smbx community(through the forums and discord).

That's just called having an interest that you care about. I like making comics (activity side) and drinking chocolate milk (substance side) more than almost anything but I'm pretty sure I'm not addicted to either of those things.

I think the video game addiction question is just a waste of time. The escapism that video games give, and then the identity built around it is my concern. Games themselves are just toys, they're benign. The people playing the games are bringing something to the table that doesn't just come from the game. You could question if movie addiction is a thing for the types of people that have a house littered with Star Wars merchandise and have watched the series so much they know all the esoteric trivia. Again, it wouldn't be the film and merchandise that's the central issue there; it's the person. What makes video games unique though is that the have reward and penalty structures, immersion with an avatar, and are designed by people for other people to have a certain range of experiences and sense of direction. There's some psychological implications to that, and from what I see video games as a commodity will double down on that and become psycho-commercialized products primarily to the point where the concept of a video game would be even more vague than it is now to the point of non-existence as a term or what would be recognized as a game today. With all of the gambling, and data collecting, already occurring it's not too much of a stretch to say the trend will continue until the point games would be used to generate a physical and psychological profile of the player and be used as a tool rather than a toy. The attachment to the "gamer" identity and the addiction to the experiences that provides (beyond just playing a game) is already pretty bad now, but may get worse.

I myself am not attached to such an addicting game, I prefer spending my time on old school games (not being literal here), like Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past or Super Mario RPG, I have addiction for more or less, underrated games in comparison to modern games.

Well i usually spend 4-5 hours a day doing smbx stuff and when my day is not busy i spend around 8-9 hours a day working on my project, chatting on discord about smbx stuff, visiting the forums and other smbx related stuff. So i feel like this interest is an addiction considering how much time i spend daily on it.
