Memory cards

Postby aero » Tue Sep 18, 2018 7:01 pm

Memory cards are inherently superior to saving to a console hard drive or that cloud BS.
  • You only really need a couple of megabytes to store all your game saves anyway.
  • No internet connection required, companies can't control what you can and cannot save.
  • If your console breaks, all you gotta do is put the memory into another console and it's like nothing happened.
Discuss.

I knew it. This should not be in Art Board.

I, myself, find the use of Memory Cards very important for most games on the PS1, PS2, & Nintendo Gamecube if you wanna keep your progess

Those systems were better weren't they? It's nice to have full complete games that save to your own storage.

Going to bump this topic explain why disagree that Memory cards are inherenty better than cloud saving:
  • Off-site back-ups (storing back-ups outside the place the data has been created) will generally have better protection than storing it in a device in you house
    • This is because there is always the possibility that something will happen that destroys you memory card or other external storage (such as a fire)
    • Most companies will have better protection measures against things that could result in the loss of backed up data
    • Ultimately, if your external storage containing saves breaks, there goes your saves (it is almost sounds like breaking your console)
  • Some people will find it more convenient to use cloud saves than to connect external storage to their consoles
  • More options to back up your data is always better at the end of the day
Of course, we shouldn't not use the other options for storage. Saving on your console is the most convenient and cheapest way (no need for buying extra devices or subscription services) (if more risky), storing on external storage has the advantages stated in the OP and I also explained why cloud saving is useful as well. There isn't an objectively better option, and being offered all 3 options is something to want in future consoles. Limiting the options is only going to make things objectively worse, and there is no reason for companies to do so (like come on Nintendo, you can store Switch games on micros SD cards and it has USB ports, there is no excuse to disallow backing up on external storage devices). Of course when it comes to storage devices, proprietary garbage like the memory cards on older consoles are not wanted today, allowing standard USB storage devices like memory sticks or external hardrives is the way to go.

Cloud storage is more volatile. Everything that's a service as a software substitute has some strings attached and could disappear without warning. Memory cards work without an internet connection, always have your data, and have plenty of storage space for game saves. USB storage is also good though.

I like memory cards. For home consoles. For my 3ds, they look as flimsy and breakable as.. erm.. my sanity
