There used to be medals but they disappeared upon a forum upgrade in early 2016

If they end up getting reintroduced they should be more meaningful than a continuation of the rank system (posting, getting thread view counts = leads to spam moreso than meaningful content). Just like in games, I think achievements should be earned with proper effort and engagement.
If done well they could actually replace the rank system and go beyond its purpose. Give a member a badge for number of posts, give them another badge for each of their special roles in the community (level reviewer, moderator, etc...).
Could also tie in well with other things (medals for actively helping other members out, posting tutorials and guides, organising community events (temporary medal throughout the event?), and even with features which we don't have in case we want them at some point (medal showcasing number of upvotes on posts recieved).

Something that could replace the rank system would be a system based on contributions instead of the raw post count. Something like the medals Enjl said, or maybe if we're not limiting stuff to status symbols on a profile the contributions themselves could be branded in a way that's on a per-post/thread basis and stuff can be marked as they come up. Essentially something like the equivalent of "topic solved" in support forums but individualized for each forum with more flair, and functions the same on a per-topic basis.

Yeah, I think the "Achievement system" idea might not be a good idea for the SMBX forums... If it was allowed, I can picture some users using these "Achievements" as bragging rights just to piss others off
