Quite literally, I despise metal. It's loud, it's obnoxious, it's repetitive, awful screaming, bad musical instruments. The only metal I like it the metal posted above in the image.

Not all of it. The bands I posted don't have screaming in them.
When I first listened to bands with screaming, I thought it was garbage, but I listened to it more. There's a lot of feeling in it, you just have to broaden your horizons.
However, I still find music with screaming that sounds pretty bad. The repetitive-ness can be found in all kinds of music. But the songs I posted are anything but repetitive.
It's subjective, really, even if a metal song doesn't have screaming and is rather calm I still don't like it. My taste is:
-decent verses
-a great chorus with a catchy tune
-splendid instruments (not to obnoxiously loud)
Metal doesn't have any of this, at the very least it has a pretty good chorus, but I've never heard a truly "catchy tune".
Funny story, I used to like rock, and that's all I listened to, and one day I was browsing the radio in my car, trying to find a good station (another rock one), and stumbled upon something with an extremely brilliant song, listened to it, listened to another, and another, and actually never knew that I was listening to pop until the next day. Until a little before I turned a teenager, I never knew pop even existed, never heard of some of the popular pop singers like Adam Levine or Britney Spears, and only thought country, rock and metal existed. Metal has simply never been my taste, and it disgusts me, though. No one can convince me to listen to it.
Otherwise, if you were wondering, I only occasionally listen to rock nowadays, and every time I do, I think of how much of an idiot I was back then when all I liked.
Ahhhh, metal. My favorite kind of music. My mom was the one who got me into this genre. First she only listened to the occasional rock song that was broadcast on the local radio stations, then she found out about a heavy metal internet stream and it's her main channel ever since. By hearing the music my mom listened to, I got interested into that kind of music more and more, and soon I was a metal fan. And by now, I even have a favorite band for the first time in my life: System of a Down. Nice tunes combined with intelligent lyrics. Too bad the four guys haven't found themselves together for a new album since Mezmerize/Hypnotize from 2005.
Let's be honest, while I am into some subgenres of metal music I loathe almost everyone who claims to be a "metalhead" - I don't mean a person who listens to metal music, I am talking about people who caused the stereotypical "metalhead" figure to occur. I also hate how some metal bands are just usually singing about violence, blood, gore and such -like Cannibal Corpse - and how these bands think that "the louder our music, the better it is". However, while I'm not into this stereotypical-violent-brutal-metal-stuff and though I don't like a majority of famous bands (sorry for hating Judas Priest, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax and Manowar), I might be the biggest fan of folk metal and symphonic metal you've ever seen, and I also tend to like progressive stuff. Let me share some of my favorite tracks;
Knux wrote:Mate, have you actually listened to some of the lyrics some metal bands put out? Fantastic. Some of it is really good.
I can never understand a word a metal artist is saying, and since it sounds like he's saying random, made up words I automatically accuse it of bad lyrics. I have never watched lyrics to a metal song on YouTube.
-a great chorus with a catchy tune
Knux wrote:Which exists in metal.
By "catchy tune," I meant on the beautiful and calm side. Not something that sounds like, "KILL YOUR BABY. HIS MOTHER WILL DIE! GO TO HELL!"
-splendid instruments (not to obnoxiously loud)
Knux wrote:Not all metal is "obnoxiously loud". Explain in more detail what you mean by this.
There is no such thing as a metal song that is calm. Even if it has its occasional moment of rage, I will consider it obnoxiously loud. I don't like loud music that kills your ear drums.
Knux wrote:But tell me, what is it about metal that disgusts you?
Each subgenre of metal varies from one another, Death metal being generally dark, violent, and has the low growl vocals. You should try listening to Metallica at some point, they're heavy metal, and they have some pretty good songs.

Screaming? You mean that thing that every untalented singer does to only pretend that they are in a metal band?
Unfortunately I'm one of the fans of metal that most metal fans probably hate, lol. Nightwish was my first favourite band, and they still remain pretty high up there. I went on to liking power metal, a genre of music that gets bashed into the ground every time I bring it up (though it doesn't change the fact that I like it). Stuff like Kamelot, Andre Matos, Sonata Arctica, and Avantasia are some examples that I like. I bet some of you would argue that these bands are not even metal, perhaps more rock/rock opera but... *shrug* I'm just not a purist, I guess.
I also like some older Apocalyptica stuff up to about 2007. They started out as a Metallica cover band with cellos.
I moved on to liking harsher stuff like Tarot because Marco, the male singer of Nightwish, is the lead singer of that band. Tarot, to me, is a perfect example of a newer-age metal band that started in the 80s and found their voice early-to-mid 2000s. He's also the first singer that showed me that screaming is actually a valid form of music; if not melodic, then textural. He has a great singing voice but he occasionally screams or growls when the mood calls for it, and that's totally cool to me.
I'm not that into classical metal, but not because I don't like it or because I think it's bad. I think it's awesome and it's cool to know how these people inspired the music of my favourite newer-generation bands. I just never find the time to culture myself.
Every time I listen to a Black Sabbath song I'm like "Hell yeah"
Every time I listen to Metallica or Megadeth songs I'm like "Hell yeah"
I just never invested a lot of time actually delving into their albums.
It doesn't help that in recent years I've stopped specifically liking only metal and I've branched out into being open-minded and accepting to loads of other genres and subgenres of music. The only music I find myself relentlessly disliking is stuff like house/dance music.
I should make a playlist of everything you guys post and just cycle through it while reading the forums or something.
Many of this band's song lyrics are about famous battles. Not that I'm into wars, but Sabaton's songs are pretty cool.
I don't care what people say about St. Anger or the new Metallica albums in general. "Frantic" is pretty cool and comes closer to the Thrash Metal style from the earlier albums than anything else since the Black Album.
The title track is nice, too. Though I like the thrashing at the beginning more than the rest of the track, lol.
I liked Death Magnetic (even though it's so fucking loud).
Death Magnetic is cool, but I agree with you, it sounds ugly. Good thing there's someone like Moderus who did all the work to rip the tracks from Guitar Hero which sound much better than those from the album release. I still wish Death Magnetic was remastered, though.
