Super Mario Bros. SMBX Edition (SMB1 Remake) Update in Progress

It's been nearly 2 years since I released my SMB1 remake on this site.
Remake can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=17413\

Looking back at it, I can see so much room for improvement.
I want to make this the definitive remake, so I've taken the incentive.

For starters, the world map was complete laziness. A lot of potential was wasted.

For that, I will be replacing it with an enhanced version of the world map from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.

Also, I will add the "New Quest", where all Goombas are replaced with Buzzy Beetles and all enemies move at 2x speed.
In this quest, I will add new and unique backgrounds.

I will also be removing the automated cut-scenes, where it could cause unfair deaths.

A lot of changes will be made to my ambitious remake, so stay tuned.

So this is... a remake... of a remake... of a game which has been remade 5 million times. The entire concept in itself is kinda lazy if you ask me. New Quest sounds like a nightmare as well, especially in terms of making it playable.

As for the world maps... old one looks better. The upscaled sprites look really unpleasant and the sharp contrasts are painful to look at. I heavily suggest bringing everything to the 2x2 pixel standard. The added warp pipe is also needless padding. I'd get rid of that for sure. Furthermore it was nice to have all levels on one island previously. Now stuff's a bit more ambiguous, which cooould turn out fine but also could just turn out to be confusing.

This is might be a SMBX episode I might find myself playing, because of the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe graphics! ^^

Yeesh, talk about picky. This stuff isn't easy you know. Also, it's an UPDATE, not a "remake of a remake". Show some respect.

The new world map looks nice, but I feel the start icon and smw world 1 sign look out of place.

The idea of implementing SMB1's second quest is neat, and as much as I wouldn't call this ambitious, I think you've done a decent job so far.

And enjl wasn't being picky, it's called constructive criticism. There have been so many SMB1 remakes in this engine it's not even funny, so I don't consider this "ambitious". You want ambitious? Check out Phil's SMB3 remake. That is something I would call ambitious.

My bad, I read SMB1 Remake in the title and then again in the post and must've missed the update part. Usually I find updates in the same thread as the original project.
Also I'm well aware this stuff isn't easy, but if you don't do any of it I can assure you you'll look back at this update in 2 years and call it pure laziness again. Making changes like that pipe on the map aren't gonna do anything for ya if they're not well thought out. What does the pipe add, other than time to walk between the meat of the game?

Can't wait to see this update finish! But judging by the only screenshot of the game so far, the graphics are highly saturated and hurting to the eye. Also, 1-2 should be red since it's a two-way exit (unless you're changing that from the original), and there is no pathway connected to the pipe; so they are just beside each other, which looks quite ugly IMO. Everything looks very crowded as well, it's ok to leave some space with no scenery or pathways.
Also, what Enjl said.

Just so you know he is basically replicating the map from SMB Deluxe

I guess it would be your opinion as to whether it is a good idea to do that

Also is it necessary to indicate all levels with secret exits?

It doesn't seem necessary, because it's just warp zones. Anybody knows about warp zones. Even if they didn't, it's not an exit necessary for 100% completion. It just warps you to another world.
