Just an fyi, Redigit was never shut down by Nintendo, he just lost interest. The only trouble he got from Nintendo was them seizing the domain supermariobrothers.org, which now just links to the Nintendo home page for Mario and that's it.
1.3.0.1 is the latest build by Redigit, though SMBX2 builds onto it with a better editor, new characters and NPCs, and some other features. Many members of the dev team, including myself, frequent the forums and there's a lot of help and support available for it. Anything built in previous versions should be compatible with SMBX2. It also has coding capabilities through the use of the Lua programming language and the LunaLua API.
38A is another "SMBX" engine, that although called SMBX 1.4, is a completely different engine. It has a number of significant issues and errors, and is likely never to be updated again. It is closed-source and developed by 38A, who has openly admitted that he hates his userbase. Although it boasts a lot of new NPCs, SMBX2's next update will exceed this.
Personally I'd suggest using SMBX2 since it is widely used and will receive more frequent updates in the future, has a great editor and feature set, and is generally pretty stable.
Also welcome back!
