Bomb Blasted Fields

Postby Tendo64 » Fri Jun 01, 2018 10:58 pm

Alright, so just some disclaimers:
This level is a tad short, and pretty easy. It is also not very representative of my current level designing skills.
(Also my first publicly posted level so, yeah.)

With that out of the way, have fun?

so playing this level, i found myself to enjoy most of it. the song choice was spot on, aesthetics were pretty decent, just that there were some poor coin/bgo placements that don't really work well with me in my opinion, and some parts also felt bland, like they don't have scenery. i wouldn't really consider this to be too short, just average for my standards. although there were some problems tho. the custom bob-ombs didn't really have it's own custom death effect, just replaced with the default bob-omb death effect, but i don't really mind. now during the boss fight, one could easily skip the whole boss fight if they just fall into the gap where the pipes supposed to rise and press down, causing them to warp in a weird position. i suggest you to hide the pipe during battle, then making it appear and rise once you have already defeated the boss. overall, i like it, just that there some things that felt out of place.

p.s. do you know what's the songs name that's played through the whole level? because i'm really digging it.
edit : never mind i already found it.

Review of Bomb Blasted Fields

Level Design

it's a world 1-like level that goes thourgh the whole linear section. It's easy, the design was okay, NPC variety, placement was alright or no cutoffs, but with that the gameplay was boring. Jumping, running, going right only removes the enjoyment. There is one thing, where you use bomb-ombs to destroy blocks. I think with that, you could use more of some creative ideas with destroying blocks, for example: ice blocks which is put here, they destroy blocks.

The star was very easy to get, I think it should be in a bit harder, hidden way to get.

The Mouser battle was typical, but there's a minus: when accidently go down, you notice you enter the pipe, which shows after mouser's death. The pipe should be lower or set its layer to invisible.

Other notes:
- 5 powerups in easy level is a bit many.
- 1-ups are very easy to spot.

Aesthetics

The graphics were alright, one error that I saw is that the death effect of custom bomb-omb was not put. The atmosphere was something in the right, although the fields don't seem to be blasted according to background. The main music was kinda fitting, but I think SM64 bomb-omb battlefield theme would fit better.

Overall

It was very average and simple level that is favorable for casual players to play, for experienced ones - not really. Otherwise good job for first level. 5/10

Hey there, Tendo64, I just played your level and here's what I think:

- The music fits the level really well as it gives the impression of this upbeat atmosphere. Is it from Sonic?
- I really like the graphics as they're quite colourful.
- Enemies designs looked great and enemies in general were well spread. I enjoyed the small gimmick with the Bob-Ombs and having to blow up the bricks.
- I found a small glitch with the Mouser boss. You can fall down the pit but instead of dying, I was able to go through the pipe and ended the level without having to kill the boss lol
- The level felt a bit linear and more verticality would've been good. You already had platforms above but some of them were filled with those Munchers. A suggestion would be to design things on two levels - one above and one below.
- There were a lot of power-ups throughout the level, not sure all of them were needed. For example, you literally have 2 mushrooms within the same frame at the very beginning (one inside a question block and the other between the blue blocks).

Overall, this level is pretty good, albeit a bit linear. It might feel a tad repetitive at times but the graphics and backgrounds are great to look at. That glitch with the boss ought to be fixed though. I'd give this level 7/10

Thanks for the review! I'll make sure to keep this stuff in mind the next time I make a level. And yeah, the song is Green Grove Zone from Sonic 3D Blast.
