Sorry for the necro-posting, but I want to give my own reply to this question for anybody also who would read this topic:
Officially, the
LAST version of (original) SMBX is 1.3 (the 1.3.0.1 is not counted as a true form of a version), after that version it officially halted. However, various independent developers started to attempt to mod SMBX or make its successors. The first bunch of attempts got no success (except the LunaDLL mod made by Kil), but in 2014 and later there are next successor projects appeared, causing SMBX to be divided into branches that developed independently from each other:
- The
Moonudst Project (initially known as "PGE Project"), is not so SMBX successor, but it's the game engine and devkit inspired by SMBX and with a goal to keep compatibility with content made for SMBX. As the engine still wasn't completed yet (my fault), the devkit of the project started to be used as a better alternative to the built-in editor of the original SMBX. Development started in 2014, and the working solution was released closer to the autumn of 2014.
-
Super Mario Bros. X by 38A (SMBX-38A, also known as "SMBX 1.4", but it's wrong), the full recreation of SMBX engine and editor (but not so accurate at physics and data support) made by Chinese developer 5438A38A, initially released in 2015, but started to be widely known at European community much later (before that it was considered as another fake).
-
Super Mario Bros. X2, the powerful extension mod over SMBX 1.3, based on the LunaLua-SMBX (the original SMBX modded with LunaLua framework), positioned as a successor of the original SMBX. The first version of the kit was released in December 2015.
-
TheXTech, is the full port of original SMBX 1.3 from VB6 to C++ (based on the source code of original SMBX, finally released on the 2nd of February, 2020), continued to be developed and progressed independently. It's cross-platform (works on various operating systems and also works on non-X86 processors such as ARM, Mips, PowerPC, etc., including the work on Android devices) and optimized to work on weaker devices. This is the youngest branch of SMBX: it was released in March 2020.
Every branch of SMBX has its own development flow, own philosophy, own development team (except Moondust Project and TheXTech developed by the same development team), and, obviously, own versioning.
I wrote an article that explains every branch of SMBX in detail:
