Tbh, you could just rename toad's files from "toad-1" to "mario-1" Although you would need to position the frames so they aren't offcentered. I've already seen this happen with a Link retexture (replacing Link with Larry Koopa, basically the wand was part of the hitbox when facing left). Not only that, but the frames for small Toad, super Toad, fire Toad, and ice Toad, would need both frames for when sliding down slopes and riding Yoshi.
To save time, I've already had the files for "model swaps" (tbh I should just call them sprite swaps because they aren't models, they're sprites, I'm just use to seeing model swaps in Smash 4 and in Brawl):
