Is there a way to set default lives in SMBX higher than 3? It would make playing with my less skilled friends much more enjoyable?

You could try using lunalua if you are using SMBX 1.3.0.1 or 2.0, not sure if you could do this in other versions...
I don't know the exact lunalua code for this to work however, but it shouldn't be too hard to achieve.
Alternatively you can make the player spawn in a room with lots of 1-UP spawners, but that doesn't give 99 lives instantly, it's the slower but non-lunalua way.

1.3.0.1 doesn't have lua support.

It's impossible to set it globally for all episodes, sadly. You're probably best off typing "itsrainingmen" and then "redigitiscool" when you start playing, for a little extra lives bonus.

Must have been 1.4 then. I know it was available on one other version than 2.0.

LunaLua can be installed in a copy of 1.3, and it will say 1.3.0.2 in the title bar, but it's not really a version. 38A has never supported any form of Lua scripting, let alone specifically the LunaLua API, and it's highly unlikely that it ever will.

Just shows I need to get up to date with my knowledge of all the versions of SMBX, lol.

38A(1.4.4) is not a version , its different engine that looks like smbx and tries to behave like smbx.

Try placing a 1up on the player when they begin the episode (but the starting level must not be a level you can access via world map. Similar to episodes that show only the intro once, and never again. Want more than 2? Simply disable the default layer and place 2 1ups where you placed them then reenable that layer, and then you'll have 4 on top of the player (if they are Link, otherwise do it on the block that the starting point is).

If you're talking about your "less skilled friends" then why is that a worry? You don't lose any progress other than a checkpoint at worst in SMBX after a gameover, you're just sent back to the titlescreen and you can continue playing the episode with default lives.

Other solution is to test it in SMBX2 with the PGE editor , because when you start testing you start out with 99 lives.

The PGE editor isn't SMBX though, it's an entirely different engine and is kinda buggy atm.

Also OP is talking about episodes for sure, and I'm pretty sure you can't save when testing a world map with PGE

I meant the editor , not the engine ... With the luna lua tester you can test it through the smbx engine.

Indeed but again, I'm 100% sure this is not about standalone levels.
