User Inactivity

I counted out 311 users with 0 posts out of the 688 registered. What does this mean?

45.203% of all registered users are inactive.
All posts belong to ~2.56% of all registered users.
All topics belong to ~21.33% of all registered users.

All together this means that a small minority of users have engaged on the forum at all. However, despite the inactivity new users are joining at a rather decent rate.

So far, the join rate isn't of much use since the forum is still pretty new. However, it can still be concluded that the majority of users who joined were from other SMBX forums, and are not all new comers.

My question is how can we expand the SMBX community, and have more users engage in discussions? The level contests seem to be giving the community a pulse; however, not nearly at a high enough rate for growth.

My recommendation would be to remove Fan Fics all together or maybe have it as a subforum for Art if it's really needed. Also, completion of the GFX page may increase reason to participate in the Graphics category more, and maintain its activity. This would clean-up the board by removing inactive categories and having more active ones appear instead.
As for gaining new users to the community, that may require making the site slightly less about SMBX and more about Mario. I could be wrong there though since that is all I could come up with.

Thoughts?

We're already gaining far more users that we have in a very long time, at least compared to 2013 Knuxforums. I really wouldn't worry about expanding our userbase, especially considering that we're now officially affiliated with Talkhaus and SMWCentral.

With the traffic Talkhaus and SMWcentral get, I wouldn't be surprised if the user base increased as it is doing now. What's important though is an active user base commonly contributing to the forums. Right now we have almost 700 members, which is good in numbers for population, but when you take into account less than half the users have done anything makes that number irrelevant.

Why does this matter? Let the forum grow at its own pace. A lot of new and veteran users are joining.

RIP Fan Fiction and Roleplaying.

This is the way it is with pretty much every forum. Look at SMWC - it says even on its front page that it as 25000+ users, and only 1000 or so are "active". I don't think we should change anything because we're not getting enough traffic or active members, as that isn't true.

If you're going to say that, merge it with the Art Board. People should be able to post their chapter books, roleplaying, fan fiction, diaries, and general writing entertainment there. A separate board isn't necessary.

I don't see a problem with user inactivity. A lot of members probably just register to check out the forum's mechanics and get used to it.

Someday we'll have a good enough RP culture here.

No we won't.

Usually you're the one saying boards are redundant and they're not necessary, and now I'm arguing with you about it. We have a lot in common, Joey. Also, I would like to make a recommendation if you're going to consider keeping this thread. How about name it "Fan Fiction, Roleplaying, and General Writing" because some users may have a chapter book in development (like I do) and it's not fan fiction, as it's my own creativity and imagination.

I've brought this up before on other forums. A majority of inactive users doesn't really harm the forum in any way.

Why are you getting so bent out of shape? That's not quite what this topic is about.

Not to start accusations, but you gave me the idea with you R.I.P. sign.

I just reread this post, and do indeed believe that we should make this forum slightly less about SMBX and more regarding Mario. SMBX isn't as popular anymore, and 3/4 of the people who play it are probably here and 1/4 of the people who don't play it are here.
Otherwise, as said before, this isn't as much of a problem with the "this percentage of users hasn't made any posts and this percentage has".

How this works:

1. Some members are active like everyday good examples are those you always see in the users online.
2. Some members just register to make a help thread and after their problem is solved they go inactive thats what happens on most forums.
3. Some members just register and do nothing at all.

This.

The entire site is pretty much rebuilt to the SMB.org appearance, so what would be wrong with deviating from the standard "smbx forums" formula to appeal to a wider audience? I don't see any damage it would do to the forum, and it would increase join rates to higher than the rate of which people migrate from other smbx forums to here.

I fail to see how getting rid of the fan fiction / role playing section would increase our activity. :/

You will finish the graphics section, though?

I'm gonna be honest, I'd rather have a good SMBX site than a mediocre Mario site. If you want a Mario site go to toadscastle.net or themariobros.net, and if you want a SMBX site go to supermariobrosx.org. I'm perfectly fine with being an "SMBX forum". I remember how Knux's forum slid off being about SMBX and how this forum was practically a Mecca for SMBX.

What FanofSMBX said. There are so many great mario sites out there and I don't see how we could become a good one given the circumstances. I'd be happy to add a forum for discussion of Mario but I'm afraid it won't get the activity it needs to warrant its existence.

Yes, Valtteri, I'll finish the sections of the site.
