Why do the official mario games feature levels that look kinda bland? It's especially weird since so many fan projects have highly detailed levels and intricate, non-blocky terrain, and other IPs like Donkey Kong Country and Wario Land are passed it.

My theory is that Nintendo wants to keep accessibility first, and level simplicity is a good way to achieve that, but in my opinion, you should be able to achieve good direction with any level setup if you try hard enough.

What are your thoughts?

Not really. I mean I guess the idea is that you'll focus more on the gimmicks than the scenery. SMBX can have gimmicks, but it just seems to be better with nicer environments.

Because Nintendo have to make the soundtrack, the graphics, and the game as a whole.
While users here use music from other games, graphics from packs, and they just have to worry about make the level and decorate it.
Also Nintendo cannot spend a whole month in just one level, but we can, we don't have any limits except for the ones that we put ourselves.
