Which is the best version to invest in for big projects in regards to community preference, popularity, and futureproofing?
(If this topic is already being discussed then locking this thread and linking the original would be appreciated)

I'd recommend SMBX2. SMBX 1.3.0.1 has a relatively poor editor (no undo button, unintuitive layout, etc.) and is becoming rather old. SMBX 1.4 (also referred to as 38A) is preferred by some but is incompatible with previous versions and has a pretty messed up physics engine. It's run by a single developer who keeps the project closed-source and maintains a poor relationship with the 38A community (by hiding features behind immensely annoying puzzles, taking feedback poorly, etc.). On the other hand, SMBX2 is open-source and run by a fair-sized group of developers (I myself am one) who are active in this community and talkhaus. This will be the official version in the future and has a really nice new editor and lots of features. There will be 500+ NPCs in the next update and it also has a very good programming system (LunaLua) that can be used to create more complex things that require some coding, though by no means do you need to use this. (It is much better than Teascript-VB which is 38A's scripting). SMBX2 is also building on the previous engine so it maintains compatibility with SMBX 1.3.0.1

Thanks! I'm assuming LunaLua is a Lua API, so I should be familiar with the syntax. Are there resources to learn about it within the download?

Not within the download itself, but here's the API page:

The API pages are a bit outdated, but the Codehaus discord server is a good place to learn the systems, as well as keep up to date with development.
