Is there a way to use a Gamepad?

I have a wired Xbox 360 Controller, drivers installed and everything. I can use it on other games, such as MMOPRGs or other flash games, but I can't quite seem to get it to work with this. Is there some sort of program I can install that will allow me to map the Xbox Controller so that I can set Keyboard Keys to Buttons on the controller?

On SMBX regular Title Screen, did you go under 'Option' and then 'Set Player 1 Control' or something like that? You can Change your Buttons and maybe the Input or something like that. Sorry, I can't quite tell that exactly because I can't use SMBX during Weeks which I do not really like.

Yeah all that Bossedit8 said is correct. If your controller, however, isn't supported by SMBX, you can download Joy2Key, but after a while (like 2 weeks?) It'll ask you to buy it. So I've looked for alternate ones and I guess XPadder, Pinnacle Game Profiler, and antimicro are good ones. I haven't tried them those out, but Joy2key works for sure

Thanks, I figured it out. I had to hit "Enter" under "Input" in the controls, and it changed it to the controller, and I was able to map it out then.

Maybe you have a controller that not supported by SMBX. My Xbox controller is, you may want to look for one of these. The brand name is Madcatz, but it's an old outdated model.
The control has be plugged in before you turn on the game, and then you go to the "Start Game". After that, find "Options" and there should be text saying something along the line of "Player 1 Controls". Click it and then amp your controls onto your controller, if you want, close the game, and if you go onto the main game or the level editor with your controller plugged it, the recently mapped controls should work.
If it doesn't, you may want to try joy2key or your controller's broken. My brother broke his Afterglow one after playing SMSE for a little bit. He wasn't mad, he was just throwing the controller with no explanation, so it's probably something like a the wire to the controller keep working and then doesn't. I just wrapped the core of my brother's controller once and then gave it to him. Worked fine.

What I did was add SMBX to Steam, went into Big Picture Mode and set the controls. (also, I know this page is from 2014, I just wanted to give an option)

I don't, but try using Steam and setting up the controller. It'll work that way. Just look at my method above (x2).

I'm pretty sure you can use most controllers (like even PS ones) as long as they're set up correctly

Using Xbox 360 controller. When I push the option to switch it from keyboard to controller nothing happens.

Did you connect it to your PC before the game loads up?

I did, in fact I've gone about the process of utilizing both joytokey and xinput plus, both of which enabled one controller. though now that im trying to get 2 players going smbx refuses to acknowledge a second controller exists. in the options for setting up the controls in game, i can set keyboard, or joypad 1. despite there being a second joypad, and in attempts, both joytokey and xinput plus recognizing there are 2 controllers, and are setup to run them both. Using 2 xbox 360 controllers.
Added in 16 minutes 53 seconds:
Oddly enough i gave smbx2 a try and it acknowledged only the first controller as both, so using the one controller was controlling both mario and luigi.

I Can't Select Any Option Other Than 'Keyboard', Even If I Have My Gamepad/Joystick Connected (My Gamepad Works With All Other Software On My PC).

Download x360ce(64), place it in your SMBX folder, startup x360ce, configure your controller, start the game.

I was having the same problem. It was working fine for me for months, then one day it just started having this problem. Believe it or not, a full PC restart fixed it just now.
