SMBX Freezes/Crashes

I decided to start working on my level for the contest, and everything went fine. When I went to save it, the screen froze up. I was still able to open up a folder and move it to my main monitor, but that glitched out my screen, resulting in a pretty cool effect that I'll record the next time it happens.

I waited about 5 minutes just in case the program resolved the freeze, but it didn't, so I opened up my Task Manager, and saw that the process had stopped responding. After shutting down the process, my entire screen went black, and then all of my desktop icons were reset and shoved into one corner. I tried troubleshooting the problem, and the second time around, the desktop icons didn't reset, but the problem persisted.

I'm still running on Version 1.3, but seeing as 1.3.0.1 has no real bug fixes in it, I haven't bothered installing it on the computer I'm using, as I almost never use SMBX on it. I'd really love the help before the contest deadline, as I haven't gotten any work done on my level, and it would really suck if I missed out on participating. Thanks in advance.

From what you described, it sounds like the problem is coming from your hardware since your screen was glitching out and your icons move into a corner. Snapping your icons to a grid by right clicking on your desktop and going to View>Align icons to grid, should fix your icon issues. If that doesn't work, it could also be that SMBX is messing with your resolution which can also cause the screen to go black and move things around. My best guess for the resolution problem would be to run SMBX on only one monitor, but it's a guess.

My icons have always been on a grid, I haven't really touched anything regarding grid aligning.

I'll list my computer hardware below, if you're interested in taking a look.
  • AMD FD8350FRHKBOX FX-8350 FX-Series 8-Core Black Edition
  • Gigabyte AM3+ AMD DDR3 1333 760G Micro ATX Motherboard GA-78LMT-S2
  • Kingston ValueRAM 8 GB 1600MHz DDR3 (PC3-12800) Non-ECC CL11 DIMM Motherboard Memory (KVR16N11/8) (I have two)
  • Seagate Barracuda 500 GB HDD SATA 6 Gb/s NCQ 16MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drive ST500DM002
  • ASUS GT630-2GD3 2GB DDR3 Graphics Card
  • Logisys 480W 20+4-pin ATX Power Supply
  • Asus Black 12X BD-ROM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-ROM SATA Internal Blu-Ray Drive (BC-12B1ST) (I have two)
  • Rosewill RANGER-M Dual Fans MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case with USB 2.0 - Black
I also have Windows 7 Home Premium installed.
Also, I haven't had any problems resolution-wise, as I've had two monitors for quite some time now. I find it strange that this problem is just now happening.

Going to bump this. I worked on my contest level again, was good for about two hours or so, even with saving, but after those two hours, the problem started up, and this time it happened when I went to switch around custom music tracks. It just seems to happen randomly, so there's no way I can predict it.

This may sounds like a stupid question, but do you have Windows XP? If so, it's just a common bug with SMBX crashing on it. SMBX doesn't work well with XP, particularly if Windows XP or SMBX itself to too heavy and takes up too much space.

One thing for sure, SMBX was made on Windows Vista. On Windows XP it has kind of a problem with it on some PC's.

First off, I'm glad you know how to read, because I stated a couple posts above, in the spoiler, that I was running on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Second, I use Oracle VirtualBox running on Windows XP Home Edition whenever I use my Vista, and I haven't had any problems with SMBX in XP.

I don't bother to read anything but the original thread, might I add.

There are less than 10 replies...

Cinderellalevossa, I have a similar problem. See if ticking Disable Sound at the start screen helps. Works for me.

Forgot to say this when I discovered the problem. This can be locked as I found the problem sometime last month or something like that.

Basically, my contest level, Magmatic Castle, can't be edited after a certain block limit. It decides to give me Overflow errors, or shut down without error. I tried to fix the level and make it better than it was previously, but the level is doomed to be broken, as this error persists no matter what.

Actually, I just took a look at the level and it has 16,334 blocks. The actual block limit in SMBX is 16,384, because it'll crash beyond that point.

What you should try to do is replace fill tiles in the tilesets with 2x2 or 4x4 equivalents wherever they'll fit. As you do this for the whole level, the block count will drop dramatically, allowing you to add more onto the level.

I never realized there was a certain block limit, so I'll take a look at it.
