In order to open a RAR file, you have to download Winzip, which is free at first but then you have to pay to use it. Sooo....
CAN WE JUST BAN UPLOADING A RAR FILE FOR CHRIST SAKE!!!
Seriously, 7-zip, another file opening service, is free and you don't have it for a small amount of time so...
Can we stop?
(also I might of overreacted a bit but this needs to be banned so I don't care)

So you want something banned because its an inconvenience to you... And not because of other reasons such as malicious and unsafe.

Uh... Newsflash, but you can open .rar files with more than one program, and one of those programs is, in fact, 7-Zip. So if you can open .rar files with 7-Zip, why are you complaining? Seems kind of silly.
Also, for future reference, just because you want something to be banned doesn't mean it's just immediately going to get banned. You'd have to give a real good case and be a real good talker if you want to get the staff to ban something or someone for you.

Could you imagine this?
"Wow! What a wonderful episode! The custom GFX are spot on, the Music is well picked, and the Level Design is the best i've seen in years. But... Its a RAR Zipped file, so into the garbage it goes."

Maybe this is how we should actually handle .rar files, that way if there are any good episodes released, we'd never be able to play them.

Even though this is just silly, i do usually use Zip files as opposed to Rar files anyway

I find it funny how I got the same silly complaint when I was new to the whole file categories and such but after discovering different amount of tools online that you can gather so you can unpack those files that are unreadable for regular means it's not bad... you just gotta use that specific tool such as 7zip (which is free and easy to use) you can get used to it. Doesn't mean you have to but it's an option for you to provide such tools to develope different amount of extensions a data can have to store files with and (un)pack it. Also reminder that a .rar file or others such as .7z requires less storage space unlike a regular folder or zip folders so you can take advantage of that aswell!

I'll be waiting for the time that somebody would want to ban .mp3 because it's larger than .ogg.

Eh, MP3s are still fine aslong as it's not too large or anything... infact you can make sure to lessen the file's size with Audacity so you can have a proper sound quality and loop... but of course OGG files are way more optimizeable for that matter aswell instead of MP3 files by getting a proper looppoint while listening to music ingame.

I actually heard someone a little while back say that they'd ban mp3 if they hosted their own contest. I think that what they were really after, though, were the 30-minute-extended mp3s that come from youtube video-to-mp3 converters. There are much smaller mp3s which work just fine.

Might have been me, and no, there's just not really a good reason not to use ogg (or midi or spc).

So at the time making this i had no idea that 7-zip could open .rar files.
Thanks for telling me though, I appreciate it.
Also this topic has no point anymore and should be locked

Alright then. For an smbx level contest I'd be fine with letting people use whatever filetypes they prefer, though if it were a different, cross-platform engine I'd opt for ogg vorbis myself. I've never been very fond of using midi, since the performance varies greatly depending on who's listening to it, and spc... isn't that just an SNES music filetype?

Yes, but SMBX2 supports it.

So, what will be the next 'please can we not use'?
But yeah 7-Zip basically is able to extract most common file types.
