They sort of look okay for a 16-bit demake of Super Mario 3D World assets imo...
What do you think I could do to improve them?
Maybe take notes from the designs of many of the 16-bit graphics from 16-bit games. Mostly the 16-bit shading on sprites and GFXs...

i'm aware that i'm 5 days late, but i think that they look great. you can only see smb3-styled GFX so many times before it gets stale.

Thank you! At first I wanted to do a SMB3 styled project, but I wanted to make some custom things to give it more personality at least, so I might make more things like this in the near future.

If you don't like it, please tell me why.
It's supposed to be an 8-bit Overworld tileset if you're wondering.

I'm assuming it's a beach tileset. It looks alright but would be a lot better with shading unless that's the style you're going for.

I like the progress so far. The tileset reminds me of a hybrid of 8-bit Super Mario Bros. 1 & 8-bit Super Mario Bros. 3 styles in early (NES) game style.

I think the grass is a bit too thick. Try making it shorter and it might improve the overall look of the tiles, even if there isn't any shading included.

You can make a grass tileset look both thick and good, it's just a matter of knowing what you're doing.
Even if these are meant to be 8-bit I still think you could add some extra detail to the grass, and maybe add a shadow to it.

I finished the basic part of the tileset, now for the complex parts.
Added after 10 hours, 26 minutes and 20 seconds:
Hey, before I start working on the complex parts, I have a question, which version of the tileset do you all think is best?

The left version is better, the curved surfaces look nicer than the jagged ones.

I agree, the rounded edges are better.

That one is better yes. The previous round one while looking better can result in the player falling off cliff due to it being a little hard to tell where the slope ends.

It gives me some Kirby's Adventure vibes.
I think those tiles could really improve with a bit of shading.

There has been shading in 8-bit.
The curtains in Zelda II, for instance, has shading.

Or like I said, the tileset of Kirby's Adventure has some sort of shading too.
8-bits does not necesarily mean flat colors.
