SMBX won't start

Hi, first time on the forums here. I've got a heapload to say, so I'll say the shortened version.
Back in like 2012-2013, I stumbled upon this game, and fell in love with it. The worlds, the levels, everything. When we got a new computer (a Mac, to be specific) I found I could no longer run it due to SMBX being supported only on Windows. I eventually got VirtualBox (Wine and BootCamp weren't working), and started up Windows XP. I downloaded the game's ZIP, extracted it, and tried starting it up. But when I click the button to start the game, nothing happens. I have plenty of space (2 GB, to be exact), and nothing else downloaded. The Level Editor button gives me the startup screen, but it doesn't load and eventually closes. Can I get some help?
I know this is pretty late since the game's been updated, but I can't find any other reliable way to play. Why won't SMBX load?
