Mapping and Humanitarian Software

If you need something to do that is of value and productive, OSM (Open Street Map) and MapSwipe are good things to try. HOTOSM, OSM's humanitarian team, lets people contribute to mapping projects in threatened and under-served areas to aid when there's: disease outbreaks, FGM, natural disasters, and all kinds of other human threats. You get to draw homes and roads onto the map for aid workers to use when distributing resources and it's a big help. If that gets tedious with searching for huts in remote areas, there is MapSwipe which is an app that lets you simply scroll past forestry and empty land while letting you tap objects you're told to look for. It gives resources to other humanitarian projects to focus on where people are instead of having to sift through acres and acres of nothing. The cool thing about MapSwipe is that there is no time wasted since swiping gives information on where people aren't located and doesn't have to be searched, and tapping leads focus in the right direction.

Give it a try by mapping your neighborhood in OSM or reaching a higher level in MapSwipe. If you do try it please reply with a screenshot of some of the work you did, and what you thought of it. Also, if there's other apps or software you're aware of (they don't necessarily have to be related to mapping) that is relevant to humanitarian projects then please share those here as well; they're all welcome.
