Story Depth

Postby aero » Sun Mar 30, 2014 7:30 pm

When you're browsing different games, do you typically search for games that have a deeper meaning with hidden messages to be discovered when you play again? If so, is there any certain point where a story goes from "deep" to just getting the player to be like "what does it mean what does it mean?" For me games that use ambiguity for most of its message seem to be less and enjoyable, and pretentious at best. That being said, when you can recall to certain parts of the story that seemed somewhat insignificant at first, it makes a much better story to me. This is the reason why I enjoyed The Last of Us, because the ending when

and many of Heavy Rain's alternate endings.

What do you think?

My favorite storyline would probably be the original Bioshock's. While the actual plot of the game is very basic, it's the backstory of Ryan and Rapture that make it very intriguing. There's not very many artists, whether in novel or film, that have created a world based on Ayn Rand's objective philosophy, and the combination of that with a Macbeth-like disgrace of Ryan provide the most vivid setting I've ever seen in a video game.

True, the "would you kindly" two at was pretty interesting, but that's not why BioShock stands out from the crowd
