Luigi U. I honestly really enjoyed the gimmick of really short and tricky levels running under a 100-second timer. Some of the levels were honestly challenging and creative. The world map and bosses could have been different, but that didn't bother me too much. Mario U comes second. It's really just everything you'd expect to see out of an NSMB title, only with more refined graphics plus some more creative level design and ideas than its predecessors.

Although if I can pick an unofficial title, I think NewerWii beats all of them. A game with that engine having 14 worlds of really neat atmospheric themes and great level design, plus gimmicks that make it stand out from the main series, is something I was quite happy to try out. It had an odd difficulty curve in some places, though. Most worlds had matching difficulty for their place in the game except for 3 and 4 having odd spikes of it, and parts of 9 were particularly easy. Other than that, though, it's really good.

I have to say, my hype for the new NSMB games has immensely died down... They're almost getting worse and worse, though I admit that NSMBU was the best installment to the series. Otherwise, from number five to number one, I'll list the game and explain why it's in its particular position.

5. New Super Luigi U - Terrible, horrible game; Luigi jumps bad, the star coins are very onerous, the secret exits are near-impossible to find by yourself unless you have a guide or a YouTube video for assistance, beating the time limit in each level is downright tough. It wasn't entertaining, and the game itself ruined my day of utter rage. Also, it seems that the developers totally forgot about the fact that this game is multiplayer-friendly; they kind of just made a bunch of levels not visually in their head imagining, "What would four players do in this level and how would they beat it and problem-solve?" Eventually though, I beat it with a probably high blood pressure, and frankly it wasn't worth the money of such a DLC.

4. New Super Mario Bros. 2 - I felt this game incredibly easy, and there wasn't any new gimmicks and it felt like Super Mario Bros. 1 - all, or most of the levels were the same. Each level was quite linear, but the introduction of the Gold Flower was colossally cheap; you could also pretty much bring this item to any level you want; in 1-1, with a golden flower, you can get over approximately a thousand coins. Overall, getting a game over was rare, and despite Boom-Boom returning with a couple new power-ups, it was not enjoyable whatsoever. I give it a 3.25/10.

3. New Super Mario Bros. - The complete opposite of New Super Mario Bros. 2, this game was way too complicated; it was required you brought items from a different level to get certain collectables in another level, and the secret exit locations were astonishingly unfair, but New Super Luigi U surpasses that difficulty of the secret exit locations which is a tremendous con about both games. The only main pro regarding it is the non-repetitive freshness of the levels. Otherwise, if you're aiming for 100%, I can't get passed world five and, not going for all of the star coins and secret exits, can at the max make it to mid-world eight. It's just a bad game, I thought, and even at number three.

2. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Before New Super Mario Bros. U came out, this was my all-time favorite NSMB game. New Super Mario Wii is a game that, compared to others, has fresh level design with a lot of exquisite power-ups and secrets. The star coins and secret exits gave quite the challenge, but it wasn't unfair like some other games stated above. I can't really say much more, other than it was worth the money and definitely is massively nonlinear.

1. New Super Mario Bros. U - You expected it; a fascinating game having some new gimmicks with the Baby Yoshis, and an awesome bonus world, also known as World 9; however, I wish World would have been at least a bit longer. I feel they got lazy towards the end and said, "Screw it, I am too anxious to start the bonus world since I have such good ideas for it; I figure I'll just rush it," but rushed or not, it was still nearly flawless. I got it for 2013 Christmas, and beat it a few weeks later. I was disappointed, but then I began playing Challenge Mode and Boost Rush, by a long shot the best modes a 2D game could ever have. I am also glad they gave Boom-Boom another chance, and implementing Boost Rush gave a good challenge, but particularly with Challenge Mode. Both I wish to see returning in the next installment to the series; anyway, New Super Mario Bros. U was my favorite game of the 2D Mario series, even surpassing SMB1, 2, 3 and World. Loved it.

Like Chad said, Newer easily takes the cake, with far more content and better level design in some areas than any of the "real" games can claim to have. In terms of the official games, NSMBU is definitely the best out of them. It was honestly a fun and fresh game to some extent, much better than I expected out of a NSMB title. NSLU was good too, but it felt unsurprisingly unoriginal. I did like it's 100-second gimmick, though.

Newer is probably the best in the fangame series, but the U is the best in the official series. But am I the only one who thinks that modern Mario games is now focusing on old powers, animals or old games?

You're certainly not alone in thinking that NSMB is all rehashes with a new power-up or two in each game, if that's what you mean. A lot of people complain about the series being built on nostalgia, and while that works for one or two games, it doesn't work if you do it this much.

People keep recommending NSMBU and it makes me feel bad for skipping it, but I figured that NSLU would be a limited edition and I wanted it so I decided to buy it first and wait for NSMBU to become a Nintendo Selects (or whatever its future equivalent will be) and get it for 20 dollars or so.

NSLU appeals to me as a hardcore-type Mario game. I love great challenges even if I don't always overcome them. The sense of reward when beating a difficult game is far greater than that of other games. It makes sitting on a chair staring at a TV and pressing buttons feel like an accomplishment, and that's a nice alternative to just meandering through a game and hardly ever dying. I say bring it on. Also, I'm a big fan of Luigi. This game was MADE for me.

I like the concept in NSMB2, but I worried that it wasn't implemented properly. In my opinion you should only have gained more coins to your total for BEATING your high coin scores rather than just getting all the coins again from revisiting the stage. To me it's farming versus speedrunning. Despite this, I would still play the crap out of this game if I had it, I just have so many other games I want to spend money on so I didn't buy it.

My current favourite is still probably the original NSMB, and I love it for pretty much everything Kep mentioned, including the stuff that he didn't like about it. I went out of my way to do a tiny Luigi playthrough of that game—getting it as soon as possible and playing through each stage consecutively, and halting progress when losing it. It was a blast. I loved the shell powerup. I loved the unique bosses. I loved getting all the secrets. I loved the competitive two-player game that you could get via download play with one card and two DSes. If you never got a chance to play it with someone, you missed out BIG TIME. It's one of the most fun multiplayer games Nintendo has made, and it got relegated to a small segment of a game and was never revisited.

NSMBWii probably impressed me the least, though I was way into the idea of four player co-op at the time. That's probably the essential way to play that game, and it's still really fun. The only thing that BLOWS MY MIND is how it freezes everyone temporarily when someone dies/gets a powerup. This is something that carried over into 3D World and it completely baffles me. It's basically requiring you to recognize when other players get attacked or get powerups to adjust your timed responses accordingly. That makes zero sense to me. I would think that the flow of the gameplay for each individual game is more important than having a consistency that spreads across the entire IP just to mesh terribly with the latest games, and Nintendo used to understand this. Who cares if you pause briefly when you get a powerup if it's an outdated concept?

That criticism also goes for the art style of the late Mario games overall. Gone are the stylized renditions of the characters that would change to fit each new game. They're all static 3D models now. It's not a terrible thing, but it is kind of disappointing to me. That's one way in which I might be favourable and hopeful for games like Yoshi's New Island. I just wish they were willing to experiment a little more, like they do with Zelda.

I have the patch for Newer so I'll pop my disk in and try it eventually. Still just another one of those games on the backburner.

NSMBU is probably the best in the official series, but the original was the first I've played. In fact the FIRST MARIO GAME I've played and I enjoyed and it was always my favorite. I still have it and I'll keep it forever

NSMBWII is just there for being played and after it to play the hacks made for it.

I will list my favorite NSMB Serie and Fanmade hacks

1. NSMBWII was my second one i got and i prefer it much likely over NSMB and NSMB2. NSMB2 mostly contained the same music used in the Wii Version which was kinda eh lame.

2. My favorite fanmade hacks from it.

5. Another Super Mario Bros
4. SMMA+ Winter Moon
3. RVLution Wii
2. Super Mario Vacation
1. Newer Super Mario Bros

Of course Newer also opened a new way into the nsmb hacking since it has some more stuff then the actual nsmbwii game like the bosses, npcs and the sountrack also. And ASM Hacking has been brought by it.

Yeah, NSMB2 was incredibly uninspired in every way. I'd even say that NSMB DS was the better game between the two, disregarding originality, just because it has the Mario vs. Luigi multiplayer and mini-games (even if most of those are recycled from Super Mario 64 DS). It was a real disappointment, even if it looked kinda unoriginal when it was announced.

I fully agree with Magician on this topic. My favourites are NSMBDS and NSLU, followed by NSMBU, NSMBW and NSMB2 roughly on the same level.
I haven't played Newer, but I've watched some videos of it, and dang it looks amazing. Brb gonna make RDV continue his Newer LP xD
