Good news - you don't have to! In 2.0 you can use .pngs as graphics, and, even if you are using 1.3, you can download PGE and use the PNGs2GIFs tool to convert them to gifs.

I think he meant that he needs luna lua in order to use png images but 2.0/38A already support it.
