There is a post in the 1.4.4 changelog there is a spoiler about bug reports and suggestions and he calls those who make suggestions about the script engine lazy. Also:

I know this shouldn't reflect on the game itself, but in the SMBX 1.4 patch notes the developer comes off as really elitist. He even has "donation points" for helping contribute to the game. My thought is, who awards points to their friends? Valtteri, Kley, etc. didn't need to have their merits counted to help. He also says that since people act stupid with bug reports, he doesn't mind hurting their feelings. o_O

A lot. Not only is it based on 1.3 (And not a completely new engine) it also has loads of new playable characters and even some blocks and NPCs. Plus, it also supports LunaLUA, which is a helluva lot better than 1.4's Teascript.

2.0 is a hack of SMBX 1.3 made by a group of developers. It uses PGE editor. This software adds Lua where you can add/edit elements like NPCs, Blocks, BGOs, players, BGPs level effects etc...

1.4 is a remake of SMBX made by 5438A38A. This software adds TeaScript, made by the author, created for SMBX, so you will find some commands/variables made for his SMBX. He remade some menus and adds new settings for some things like play another custom music that the one used in the section, or change blocks, bgos, players, etc... 's Settings.

Those softwares are differents, but I don't use lua and 2.0 so I can't set my review of it.
But TeaScript is easy for me, thank to the scripting help I can made some things for my levels.

Anyway I let your choice to choose if you go to 1.4 or 2.0 and listen other point of view.

It is basically an update to 1.3. It is not a romhack in the same way as you would hack games on consoles.

I don't think it's an "update" as you think it, of course it adds things but, I think it's an update by hacking original SMBX to implement LunaLua (In SMBX engine especially) and add some things that you can use it easily thank to PGE's editor.

I mean you could call it a hack, since it's a DLL Injector; it does hack the exe to add new content and allow for scripting (and some antiviruses flag the game now because it is an injector), so that's cool

I usually use 1.3.0.1 and 1.4.X to play SMBX episode.
Use 1.3.0.1 not 1.3 because it have some high quality things such as music.

I'd suggest give SMBX2 a try instead of 1.3. It's basically the same but with more stuff, and it still supports everything that 1.3 did.
