Looks really good for a desert temple or pyramid.
Could you make a climbable vine that is a similar style to the ones at the top?

Literally beat me to it lol but the difference is that I used the original game sprites, I don't know if it gonna look as good as yours though since it's the same graphics from the game, no clue if Sonic the Hedgehog fits with SMBX style. (I may post it anyway)
Good tileset, I would use it in my project.

This tileset is actually a good recreation/restyling to the original and I like it so much. All that I can say is good job.

I am so loving this tile set! Points for making it from scratch than ripping from the Sega Genesis masterpiece!

I love that the sand looks a bit golden, that's my second favorite color. I also like the crystals that come out of the ground, it's a nice touch to the cave environment.

There does not exist a tileset exclusive to any version.
SMBX2 can use both .gif and .png files.
If you want to use a .gif tileset in 38A/1.4 then use GIFtoPNG
If you want to use a .png tileset in 1.3 then use PNGtoGIF.

PNG files don't.
If you need them to be .gif files then use PNGtoGIF (which comes with PGE and also creates the masks for you).
If you use SMBX2 then the only files that will have to be converted to .gif are background2 and level files, as they are buggy in PNG.
