Some backgrounds have boundaries to which you can extend them, such as the SMB3 Blocks. If you go beyond the boundaries then you'll end up in some kind of "dead zone" and anything that enters it will start leaving trails. To fix this issue, just use a different background.

When you open SMBX, does it say something like "SMBX Version 1.3.0.1 is now available for Download!" in the splash screen or not? If so, you're running 1.3.0.1.

That's what they were trying to prove. If you download 2.0 Beta 3 (it's an announcement on the forums) the new editor fixes things like this and adds a lot more. It's a a bit different, but it's definitely worth checking out and getting used to

Then if it looks like 1.3.0.1 and it plays like 1.3.0.1, then it definitely must be 1.3.0.1. In other words, you're running 1.3.0.1 for certain. Also, read what PixelPest said: there's an announcement at the top of the forums which teases a new version of SMBX: version 2.0. You might want to check it out.
