Why isn't this open source?

Postby Robert Claypool » Sun Dec 18, 2016 11:17 pm

I've seen many projects shut down by Nintendo and you can find torrents of the last state of the projects, but without the source no one can take the project further if something like that happens or build on the project. What are the reasons this one isn't?

We have several developers who work on SMBX 2.0 and PGE and at least PGE is open source while SMBX it doesn't... apparently.

Redigit, the developer of Super Mario Bros. X, has not yet decided to release the source code. The game has been extended upon by the 2.0 dev team, so you should check that out (there's an announcement for the open beta).

I'll append: having 1.3's sources just allows faster re-implement compatible features of the Legacy Engine into new PGE Engine to don't dig kilotons of ASM code and value tracking tests as we now doing while processing reverse engineering of the Legacy Engine.

So SMBX is written in Visual Basic? I wonder how easy it would be to port to QB64?

We still don't have anything to port though without the source code

Heh, yeah. But didn't some versions of Vb6 just store their source in the exe file and just attach an interpreter? If SMBX was compiled in such way, we could get VB6 sources (albeit probably messy, with all comments missing) directly from the exe. Also anyone has Redigit's contact info? Maybe all we need to do is just... ask nicely?

That would be a perfect christmas gift.

I mean, the only thing he (Redigit) has to do with the game currently is his name in the credits.
