KK, i'm pretty new to this so don't post any rude comments.

I've been wondering how to make a custom episode.
Can someone help me on this?
Please?

first of all, you gotta create a world map, it must contain many worlds, not only one.
every world should have 5-8 (or more) levels, and must have a boss battle at the end.
levels must be fair and simple, you could make a vanilla (no custom gfx) level, or a level with custom gfx (recommended). your choice.
you could also make custom map gfx if you want.
now to make a playable episode:
-go to the world map editor
-press the far right section (i think its settings)
-you will find 'world name', type in it the episode's name.
-now in the SMBX menu it should be playable.
now to make playable levels in the world map:
-go to world map editor
-click the section 'levels'
-'level filename' is the levels file name, the filename should have a .lvl at the end of it.
-'level name' is how the level's name will appear on the map. Ex: frosty freezy cave
if you don't understand something ask me.

Not necessarily. Hubs are good too, or the mode where you go directly from level to level

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Many worlds is not really a good idea, especially for a first project. You could even just have one.

Since you're new at SMBX, you might want to start making single levels because you'll improve rapidly if you take feedback well. Then once your design skills are good you should try for an episode, even a minisode (small episode with just a few worlds, maybe 5-12 levels total, etc.).

Overall, many worlds with 5-8 levels could add up to a lot. For a first project, not a good idea.

Also what's up with the boss battles thing? They're not mandatory and could be placed throughout the episode in a large variety of ways.

Fair and simple is a good idea to start, but too simple is boring. Especially a whole episode of simple.

Tbh I couldn't even follow this and it's a severely lacking guide.

Try taking a look at the stickied (shell) threads in the Help and Support forum. They should have good guidance overall. You can also use the Search feature on the forums to find more relevant topics that could help. You should also go to the Archives forum and find under Archived Forums --> Levels --> The Best and play some levels from there. If you're a visual learner like me, it might help to figure out configuring an episode by taking a look at how other episodes are structured. Most of the episodes under the Featured Episodes tab at the top of this page are good. You can also use them to get a feel for good level design and structure. I'd stay away from Luigi's Fight for the Mushroom Kingdom and Super Mario Enigmatic for now, since although they're some of my favourite episodes, they're very tough

You will need to create a new folder in the worlds folder.
Then create a world map (In legacy editor, you will need to switch when on the level editor, and in PGE (which is recommended) you select world map when creating a new map/level). You will need a world map even if you don't intend to use a world map. There are several functions you may want to know about:
  • Episode title is what is displayed when you are selecting levels.
  • You can tick 'Hub styled world' (No world map in legacy) if you want to use a hub instead of a world map
  • 'Restart last level on death' is ticked to make it so that you when you die you will return to the level you died in, rather than going back to the the hub/map.
  • Intro level will start you in that level instead of the map and required for hub based worlds (The intro level will be the hub if 'Hub styled world' is ticked) and you put the level file in there so the game knows to start that level.
  • Total stars display how many stars the episode has, and should match how many there actually are
  • The credits will add to the credits when the episode is completed (when an event is triggered causes 'game end: Bowser') and will be displayed on the SMBX 2.0 launcher.
  • The disable character options make the ticked characters not usable in that episode.
The world map should be saved in the episode folder.

Any levels that are made for the episode also go in the episode folder. Make sure they are linked to the levels on the world map/hub warps and where you want warps to lead to a level by putting their file name in where you can and want to put in levels.
