CONTEST: Want to work on something that'll be featured on the SMBX website?

Super Mario Bros. X needs your help, but I can't say why just yet.

I'm working on a new part of the website - what this part is won't be revealed yet, but I can assure you it's going to be awesome. What I need are some graphics...but not just any graphics.

I need screenshots of levels!

That's right, this is essentially a screenshot contest. However, due to the nature of this new part of the SMBX website, there are certain specifications that your screenshot must meet. Here's a list:

- Your screenshot must be 960 by 480 pixels. This is the equivalent of 30 blocks by 15 blocks.
- Your screenshot must wrap. This means that it would look like a continuous level if you were to place the same screenshot on either side (no cutoff, etc.). The backgrounds do not have to wrap.
- Your screenshot must use custom graphics. These CGFX preferably should be SMB3-styled, but if you want to try something different then go ahead. Please don't go overboard, though.
- Your screenshot cannot have playable characters or HUD elements in it.
- Your screenshot cannot show anything that is not possible with SMBX or the current X2 beta (this means no 38A stuff).
- Your screenshot shouldn't have a ton of stuff going on in it. Just the blocks, BGOs, and some NPCs will do, but feel free to make those things interesting.
- Your screenshot cannot use a fused background - this means no cave/sky, forest/sky, or desert/sky combos (or anything else that fits into that category).
- Your screenshot must fit into one of these categories:
  1. Sky
  2. Forest
  3. Cave (preferably with water of some sort, even just in the background)
  4. Fortress
  5. Cavern in the style of Metroid or another game
- For every category except for sky, your screenshot must vertically start or end with blocks or BGOs (think of it as a floor and a roof - see the following screenshot for an example). Sky levels should have an open top.
- Your screenshot must be submitted as a PNG.
- You must save your level - please do not delete your levels; you'll need them if your screenshot is accepted!

Here's an example of something that's the right size and has some examples of what to do and what not to do:

Image

You are encouraged to submit multiple screenshots, but please only submit one screenshot per category unless your screens are substantially different (e.g. rainforest vs. autumn woods for the forest category). Submissions are open throughout this coming week and will probably continue after that depending on the amount of submissions and how much time all of you need. You can submit your screenshots to me via PM or by posting them in this thread.

I'm excited to see what you guys come up with! Some submissions may be automatically accepted, and some may be sent back for revisions. Be sure to save your levels after submitting screenshots of them! We'll need to account for background wrapping later on if your screenshot is accepted. Depending on the quality and amount of submissions, we will have anywhere from 0 to 25 winners. Your designs will be featured on a new part of the Super Mario Bros. X website for the world to see. Good luck!

When the editor stops being an idiot to me, I'll get started right away.
Speaking of that...

Just a few questions/comments:
  • Will we be given credit on the page?
  • Will it be another tab at the top of this page?
  • Who will be judging/choosing these screenshots? Just you or do you have/need other people to help with the decision making process?
  • Why do we necessarily need custom graphics?
  • Also, why the categories? There's so many great options outside of them, what's the purpose of limiting it to those?
Well anyway, I'll submit at least a few even after all that

Glad to see the website is looking up soon. I'll see what I can do.

Will we be allowed to submit screenshots of other people's levels? The rules didn't say they have to be our levels.

I added that the screenshots must wrap. Sorry for not mentioning that earlier!

Well anyway, I'll submit at least a few even after all that
1. You'll be given credit on the/a credits page.
2. In terms of pipes, probably not, but I'm not sure!
3. Myself and some other staff members, so we should be good.
4. You don't have to use a lot of custom graphics or completely custom graphics, but it can't be vanilla. Keeps things interesting.
5. I don't want to spoil anything! I will say, though, that the categories are pretty broad - there's a lot you can do with just the word "forest" or "fortress". We might add another category at some point, but no guarantees.

Ehh...you'll have to get permission from them and I'll need to know who made it (since they'll be given credit instead).

Just because something's vanilla doesn't mean it can't be interesting

I know, but the rest of the site is mostly vanilla too.

So you're just looking for variety?

The rest of the site didn't consciously have much to do with the decision, but yes. Custom graphics are more than appropriate for what the addition to the site is going to be.

In an honest way, this makes a lot of sense.
I almost thought of a vanilla thing too so thankfully I got a new idea within the selected categories.

I guess I could join, if only because I haven't joined a contest on this site yet (also I'm kind of interested in where this is going).

If we could pass screenshot in each category, is it possible that two or more screenshot will win?
