I've had way too many instances in my life where I pushed/pulled the door when I was supposed to do the opposite. I'd suggest looking if the door is outward ( then you need to pull ) or inward ( then you need to push ). I'm an expert on doors. Trust me.
This is an actual tip. It took me 12 years to realize this. Now I'm less paranoid about opening doors utilizing this new found knowledge.
