Flowery Meadows

Postby Angelus » Sun Jul 24, 2016 7:01 pm

Hey there, this is my newest level: Flowery Meadows. It's an 1 - 1 level planned to be part of a project I'm currently working on. It's also my first straightforward level, and probably the one that I've put more thought into so far. This is intended to be played as Toadette (Peach), since the level was designed after her abilities. So, be aware: this level was not designed to be played as any other character, so don't try to play it as Mario, or Toad, etc. Just hit the Toadette block at the beginning of the level and go ahead. Credits are into the level folder.

If it's only meant to be played as Peach, you should add character blocks at the beginning

UNOFFICIAL REVIEW OF FLOWERY MEADOWS BY ANGELUS

Getting back into reviewing :^)

Gameplay (60%): 2.5/10
First of all, I noticed that you have a Peach block at the beginning of your level. That implies that you want it to be played by Peach, but you don't have any of the switches that block the player's path unless they're Peach. So if I wanted to, I could skip that block and play the level with any other character. However, for the sake of the review, I just played as PEach.
Moving on to the actual level. To be honest, this level is extremely forgettable. I couldn't even remember the name of it right after I played it. The main problem is the very repetitve level design: most of the enemies are either Shy Guys, Nippers, or those flower things (Crazee Dazees, I think) and you couldn't do much besides run to the right. Sure, there are a lot of plants on the ground, but they're all filled with either vegetables or coins. There are also no powerups in the level at ALL, taking even more purpose away from picking up the plants. The only part I really remembered was the "throw the vegetables at a line of flower enemies to get a 1up" part. It was a neat idea, if faulty (I only got 8000 points ;A;) but it added variety to an otherwise boring level.

Graphics (30%): 5/10
Your graphics choice wasn't BAD, but it was also forgettable, just like the gameplay. I did like how you used two different tilesets together (SMB2 and SMB3) and they looked very nice. However, that's about all there is to the graphics. There were little flower BGOs placed around the level, but nothing else really stood out to me.

Music (10%): 8/10
The tranquil music fit the level very well, actually. The thing is, it also makes the level more boring if you're playing it for a long enough time.

SCORE CALCULATION

Gameplay (60%): 15/60
Graphics (30%): 15/30
Music (10%): 9/10

Overall Score: 39/100 = 3.9/10 (Average)
Not a terrible level, but a very forgettable one. Try to diversify your gameplay a little by adding powerups and different enemy types, and it could be very nice!

Thank you for your review, I really appreciate that and will be looking forward to improve my levels! However, I would like to point out that there are powerups in some of the grasses. Maybe I should've made it more obvious though. You can find two Mushrooms here and there, but yeah, maybe putting them inside the blocks could be more effective.

It's supposed to be a simple straightforward level, so I don't see any problem on giving the player the need to solely move right. Also, 3 different type of enemies into a level aren't enought? There's a bonus area to be found though, just for the fun of it. And I tried really hard to not make it repetitive, so I'm kinda disappointed with myself. Oh well.

I would like to know, what exactly should I've done about the graphics? Once again, they're supposed to be simple. I'm not very fond to customized graphics, so... I just kept it like a classic Mario level.

Maybe more different kinds of BGOs? I don't know where you got your graphics from, so it's hard to say without seeing the GFX pack :P
