Super Mario Bros 1 Remastered! (SMB1R) [Current version: Beta 0.3]

Postby MarioKirby101 » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:28 pm

Hello everyone! I may be new to this forum but not SMBX, for a while it wasn't sending the activation code for my account. For quite a while I wasn't really interested in making levels, so I just downloaded episodes and played them. But now it seems like there are 3 issues:
1: I've already beaten the episode
2: The episode is so hard I can't beat it
3: The episode doesn't look worth playing
That's why I'm making this. Thanks to the graphics of Sedinuar, I am now making a remake of Super Mario Bros. with tons of new features. What are they, you ask? Well, just about everything. While the original levels are still present here, they all underwent at least a few small changes, many had more. I've added new levels as well, so you don't always have to just play the same ones. Secret exits are a bigger part of the game, especially with Star Road where you can get access to many of the game's power-ups.
Here's a couple videos taken without a capture device or anything...

I mentioned that I'm not new to SMBX, right? That's how I can upload this beta version. And yeah, I know this is on a different website, but it works for me. I think you can click on 2 links easy enough. Oh, and also, there are some screenshots located on that site as well, I think you can do it.

PROGRESS: Levels: 29/64 Levels.
The next version is coming... soon. Have fun!

Instead of pointing a video camera at your computer, try using a program like Bandicam to capture your screen directly. It'll look much better than these videos. Also, since you're sharing these videos on the forum, allow playback on other websites so people don't have to go to Youtube to actually watch your videos.

Other than that, it doesn't look bad, but the design looks a little bland. Maybe try making the design stray a bit more from the original SMB1 levels? Also, at 5:04 in the first video there's a sizable platform that doesn't extend down to the bottom of the screen, creating cutoff. In the encounter with the Hammer Bros, you don't really need to do the weird thing with the switches, you can just make put both hammer bros on a layer and then cause the star to appear when no more objects are left in the layer. I read the message about the tanks, but I didn't really understand what you meant. If you use the tank wheels NPC and tank pieces NPCs you can use autoscroll and it will look normal. The way that you did it looks really strange. The pyramid level with the challenges looks interesting, but the challenge with the mushroom blocks looked really tedious.

Overall, not too bad, but a lot of the levels are too similar to the original SMB1 levels, and there are some issues with graphics and the way things are set up.

Well this project looks relatively interesting even though some areas looks bland and such but you can always modify it to make it good. I do look forward as of what it will contain and such. One thing though which is relative to your videos, why can't I watch it in this place (place as in this forum for example) but only watch it in YouTube itself? It's really weird to be honest...

That's probably why it's called "Super Mario Bros 1 Remastered" though.

1. I might try that...
2. Really? That's not the case with me... Even so, I don't think it's that big of a deal.
3. I didn't notice that...
4. With Snifit and "No more objects in layer" I find that if you kill the Snifit first/last and after he's shot a bullet, the event won't trigger. And since Fire Bro. is a custom graphic for Snifit, I don't want to force the player to quit out just because of a glitch.
5. Autoscroll is very hard to use for me, so I just used a moving layer to make it at the very least play well. Offscreen NPCs plus moving layers have... interesting effects when they come onscreen. I may fix this issue later, but for now it will do.
6. I know, I'll probably lower the platform. That's not the only bug with that level anyways, so it will probably be fixed.
7. SMB1R is supposed to similar to SMB1 anyways. Also, there are some levels in the current version that aren't shown off here, those levels have a more altered design than the ones shown off here.
8. I will try my best to fix any issues that I see, but if any bugs are found by others I will fix them as well. ;)

Can't wait for yet another SMB1 remake with slopes being the only change from the original

There are definitely be more changes than just that. On a side note, Beta 0.3 should be release this week if all goes to plan.

It doesn't seem to be real changes though. If you really want to do a remake of SMB1, you should try to make something like this.
Honestly though I'd make original levels instead of wasting time in a remake.

Well even if it's mostly a remake they still can do that for their own SMBX Episode's creations... even if we had like, countless amount of remakes in the past actions on any Level Editors out there (Mario relative or not). It's not really a bad thing to remake a game like that and even have some edits here and there...

I still like, look forward to it. I wish you good luck by that.

There are original levels in this along with the remade ones. If you don't like my idea in doing this, then don't download the episode. Besides, the video said I woudn't be showing off secrets, which can help you find more original levels. Also, this project isn't even halfway done. There are more original levels later in the episodes. And regarding SMB1X, that's where I got the inspiration for this.

(Yes I know I'm double posting) SMB1R Beta 0.3 has been released (although the link for it remains the same).
