FPS boost trick

So, while I was scouring Nexus for Skyrim FPS boosters, I came across
this. What am I trying to get you to download? It's a command prompt file that runs MSW Media Player without having MSW Media Player open. How will this help me? You might ask, for which I have an answer! MSW Media Player contains a special program named “Multimedia Class Scheduler Service" or MMCSS for short. It was added in by Microsoft to compete with iTunes by speeding up the FPS for MP3's and other common medias. When you run the command it opens MMCSS without having Media Player open, giving you an FPS boost while not having Media Player open directly.

Huh, sounds interesting. I hate it when my MP3s drop frames.

It doesn't directly speed up the MP3's, but Media Player takes a lot of power, so to make sure other programs run smoothly while using Media Player they added the file to combat the weight of Media Player. If you go to the site they explain it better.

Does that mean FPS will be even greater if I don't have Media Player open in the first place?

If you download the file it runs the commands without having WMP open, giving you the extra speed while not using as much CPU. Read the page, it explains it better then I'll ever be able to.

Artemis008, the reason folks are confused is because "FPS" is a meaningless term for audio files - it only describes how often the picture is updated for video. Each "frame" is one image of the video, and the frame rate is how many different images you see flash past each second, creating the illusion of motion. FPS doesn't apply to MP3s at all.

It doesn't speed up the MP3's, Media Player takes a lot of power from your PC, so they added in the file to make
other programs run smoother. You don't usually notice this because Media Player takes so much power, it end up just leveling out the system. When you run the file
without WMP, there's nothing CPU heavy to level out the effect of the boost giving you the extra power.

Oh, gotcha! Sorry for the confusion, that makes more sense.
