Super Mario: Judgmental Malice

Postby Arcussma98 » Mon May 02, 2016 5:20 pm

Hello Hello everybody! Man it has been a while. I'm sure many of you do not know who I am, so for those who are unaware, allow me to explain.

I used to go by The X Khraken 7 way back on knuckles96 forums. A name I would like to abandon all affiliation with, thus my new name, Arcussma98.

Many of you may remember me as a pretty lackluster level designer. That was a long time ago and I'm here to challenge that reputation with a new project that I hope everybody will enjoy.

This project has been an idea of mine for more than a year now but due to time constraints and overall bigger life priorities I found little time to work on it. Hopefully now that things have settled down a little bit I will be able to work on it more efficiently and bring you what I call:

Super Mario: Judgmental Malice

Lets walk through the basic plot, shall we:

A picnic in the Mushroom Kingdoms giant land, hosted by the fair Princess Peach. Nothing could possibly go wrong here, right? Oh so wrong! Like always, Bowser has to ruin the party. Once again Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach with the intention of taking over the Mushroom Kingdom. Bowsers originality certainly hasn't changed a bit, but what of his Doomship? Goodness, that has taken quite the advanced turn. Now with reinforced defenses and advanced technology, Bowsers Doomship went from a mere childs boat to a battleship of dominance. But how? Surely Bowser does not have the brain capacity to do this on his own. Who else is pulling the strings...? None of this matters to our heroic Mario, as he once again rushes to save Princess Peach from Bowser. On his way though he meets a familiar face... Link?! Last I recall, Link was saving the land of Hyrule for the 15th time, what in the world is he doing in the Mushroom Kingdom? Well, I guess only he knows the answer to that. As Link explores the Mushroom Kingdom he encounters Princess Peach, who has retired from her damsel in distress days and has taken action to escape Bowser and ruin his plans herself. Link is oblivious to who this princess is, and, blinded by his own desperation to rescue princess Zelda, mistakes Peach for Zelda with Peach out of any options to convince him otherwise. This leads both Link and Mario on a chase for Peach. When Link and Mario meet, they antagonize eachother off of a misunderstanding that the other has malicious intentions for the capture of Peach, making them enemies of eachother. Link and Mario, now filled with more determination than ever, double their efforts to rescue Peach before the others do, with Bowser on hot pursuit the whole way through. On the way though, Mario is faced with a foe that is surely not of this world. This mysterious figure shows himself suddenly blocking Mario's path, with the intention to take him out. Few words are spoken by this mysterious figure other than that he is "simply following the orders of Link"... So of course Mario, now fueled with rage, triples his efforts not only to find Peach, but to destroy Link. This poses as a problem though, for everywhere Mario goes, strange events begin to occur, from sudden bolts of dark magic to tainted enemies growing out of seemingly nothing. Could this be the work of the mysterious figure from before? Probably, to be honest. But why go to such lengths? These tainted creatures and blasts of hexes are destroying the Mushroom Kingdom bit by bit, all just to get rid of one man? It seems too extreme for something like that, even for one such as Bowser. Who is this mystery man? And what could his real intentions be...?

The story will be split into three paths. Mario's path, Peach's path, and Link's path, each consisting of 10 levels en route to the final path, where an ending is finally reached. Peach's path will provide easy and gentle difficulty as well as a lighthearted step into the adventure, perfect for beginners. While Link's path will prove to be a test of skill and endurance, with relentless waves of foes and tricky level design, this path truly is for the veterans. Every path will need to be completed in order to access the final path, so get your game face on and fight for all three of our protagonists!

Now, lets go into detail about the plot of each path:

Mario's path:
Mario is on hot pursuit of Bowser, with the aim to rescue Peach. On his way through countless lands he meets Link, who has apparently ordered a mysterious man to try and stop Mario. This mystery figure is merciless in his task, endlessly pursuing Mario with vicious attacks and summons, destroying the Mushroom Kingdom with every blast. Can Mario overcome this gauntlet and save his fair princess?

Peach's path:
Peach is a damsel in distress no longer. With a fierce passion and strong will, Peach confronts Bowser herself, escaping as well as damaging his Doomship. It is now a chase for Bowser to find Peach and capture her again. Bowser succeeds multiple times only to be overthrown time and time again by Peach, who has now conquered Bowser's army as well as his son, Bowser Jr. Peach finds herself in the middle of a fight between Mario and Link shortly after, but is suddenly transported to a strange room and quickly greeted by a strange individual, who introduces herself as Yunei. Yunei explains that due to Peach's existence, there is much chaos brewing in her kingdom, which has caused an ancient seal to be broken by a warrior clad in green who was searching for Peach. Yunei proceeds to try and kill Peach, explaining that with her dead, the mindless violence will end. Peach prevails and escapes back to her own world. Bowser, growing tired of Peach's actions, corners Peach and captures her once more, this time with the intention of destroying her directly by his own hands. Can Peach stop Bowser and save her kingdom?

Link's path:
Link is hard at work training his sword hand at the sparring hall of Hyrule Castle, until suddenly, he passes out and wakes up in an entirely different dimension, the Mushroom Kingdom. Lost and confused, Link begins to explore around for answers. He comes across a long abandoned temple hoping to find clues. Upon venturing in, he discovers a mystical seal guarded by a menacing beast who engages Link right away. With no choice but to fight, Link slays the beast, thus breaking the seal and unleashing what was trapped inside. Fearing the worst, Link braces himself, but to his relief, what unearthed was a seemingly friendly man who introduces himself as Arcuss and informs Link of a princess in danger in the kingdom. Link feared it may be princess Zelda, and readied himself for a new adventure, with Arcuss offering allegiance to get rid of another man who was also looking for the princess. Arcuss manipulates Link into believing that Mario intends to capture Peach for an evil purpose, and the two become fast enemies. Link begins a speedy chase after Bowser, who has been constantly capturing Peach and sending his waves of minions to stop Link. Link overcomes them all on his way to the volcano where Bowser is heading. Upon arriving, both Mario and Link find eachother once more, along with Peach who has escaped again. As both Mario and Link watch Peach get captured by Bowser one last time, Mario is then thrown into battle with Arcuss as Link attempts to pursue Bowser. Link is soon stopped though, for he is intercepted and brought to a strange battle platform by the hands of an unknown enemy. Now face to face with a strange man who introduces himself as Sevran, Link is brought into an intense battle to the death with Sevran holding nothing back. Link does not know why Sevran is fighting, but his hand of justice will never give up

Now, I'm sure you're all wondering who Arcuss, Sevran, and Yunei are. These three are new characters introduced in this project and will play large roles in the story. I will go over each of them now. (NOTE: These pictures were taken from a less than perfect preview sprite for each character. There will be some irregularities but I assure you they will not have these irregularities in-game) (ALSO BIG thank you to Crystaltherenahog for making these for me! Go check out her Deviantart!)

Arcuss
Spoiler: show
Image
Arcuss is the main antagonist of the project and son of Sevran and Yunei. Arcuss is the mysterious man who was released from his seal by Link. With unclear intentions, Arcuss can be very unpredictable and nobody really knows what he is planning except for his mother and father. Very serious and stubborn, Arcuss will not take no for an answer and will not stop until a task he is given is completed. While his true motives and unclear, he truly brings his best everywhere he goes
Sevran
Spoiler: show
Image
Sevran is a secondary antagonist of the project and husband of Yunei, father of Arcuss. Sevran is responsible for Link's sudden appearance in the Mushroom Kingdom and is also responsible for summoning the guardian of the seal. Clearly he has big plans, and needs Arcuss for those plans. Or does he...? Is Sevran really an evil mastermind or does he just simply want his son to be happy? Once a true hero who saved the Mushroom Kingdom from the brink of destruction once before, his love for the kingdom is clear. So why the sudden change of heart, why the sudden lust to have Arcuss obliterate Mario? Why go to such lengths as attacking Link on his chase of Bowser in order to ensure Arcuss succeeds and Peach remains captured? What is the purpose in all of this, and why does he seem so grim and reluctant to fight? Why...?
Yunei
Spoiler: show
Image
Yunei is a supporting character (for the most part) in the project and wife of Sevran, mother of Arcuss. Yunei is the one responsible for sealing Arcuss away. her reasons for doing so are never mentioned, but I am sure they will be made clear in due time... While a strong fighter, Yunei has constant worries about the future of the world and her family. She was opposed to Sevran's decision to free Arcuss from the beginning, but was powerless to convince him to stop. Yunei heavily dislikes violence but will push herself to her limits for the good of the world. Sadly she has false beliefs on who the cause of this danger is, and tries to get rid of Peach. She eventually comes to her senses and offers assistance to Peach afterwards, which grants Peach the power she needs to stop Bowser for good. But what has Yunei so worried? Why seal away her own son? Why be so opposed to his seal being broken? I feel there is a danger we have yet to realize, and Arcuss is likely at the center of it...
And of course, I'm sure we all want screenshots, right? Well here they are! (This project is still in very early development, so the amount of screens are minimal. Still, I hope they suffice for now)

And that should be everything for now. I look forward to finishing this project for all of you, and I hope you like what I have to show right now!

This project looks pretty nice, the atmosphere looks pretty nice. I recommend you add some NPCs and coins.

Do not worry my friend. The screens taken and shown here are for the most part, the beginning of each stage and npc's/enemies will certainly be plentiful in other parts of each stage

I think a level needs NPCs and Coins (Especially Coins!) all the way though, instead of just the later parts of the stage. Remember, the beginning of each stage is the first thing that the player sees upon starting that stage. If the stage lacks Coins and NPCs in the beginning, the player might think that the entire stage is going to be like that, and will likely lose interest pretty quickly and stop playing.

By the way, really nice project! The story and characters all seem really interesting. Keep up the good work.

What I mean by beginning, is that the screens are literally taken from the absolute entry point of the stage, coins I understand so I might add more of those near the beginnings but I don't want players to have to immediately worry about something harmful without having at least a little bit to monitor the things around them. When I say other parts of the stage I mean literally everywhere else aside from in the screen I took, even the slightest nudge of screen placement would have you seeing some enemies and such, but upon immediate entry I want players to have at least a little bit of safety time to observe the theme and initial layout. Do not worry, I have been part of SMBX for longer than it may seem and have played many many different levels and episodes. I know the importance of coins and enemies lol, so do not worry
