Well you just caught the right block's attention. I will switch my focus to 2.0 (as I can't find 1.3.1 with LunaLua, if someone can direct me to it I will cover it as well)

If you search for a Mario fangame, I bet SMBX is going to be one of the top search results.

SMBX needs some gameplay elements from a
Japan-Only Super Mario game,
Super Mario Bros. Special!

Why not do so yourself? Most of your suggest for 2.0 things involve somewhat obscure stuff that very few people would recognize or use

Keep in mind that during SMBX's shutdown in the past (2010-2011), not only the main website take it's effect (well, later on), also any kind of SMBX videos on YouTube who runs 'em (redigit and as303298 the most) got taken down aswell. Funny enough that after that event you can upload SMBX videos again no matter what. ;P

Super Mario Bros. Special
Had to look that up, is that cover art the first place Bowser looks like his modern incarnation?
Back on subject, I think it's kind of pointless to encrypt Lua save data. If someone wants to cheat the system by editing it, why try to stop them? If you design the system well it should be more gratifying to do it legitimately; the same applies to cheat codes. The only reason I can think of is to discourage edits that might break the save.

What do you mean? The gameplay is the exact same as SMB1, only the palette and the level design changes

You forgot the expansion of power-ups! That's what made SMB Special more extended.

True. It would be cool if we could see some things lie the hammer in SMBS.

While his statement isn't 100% true about SML2, it isn't inaccurate either as SML2 is often seen as inferior to the console Mario games.
He's correct about Super Mario Bros Special though. I'm actually surprised that it was even mention at all, as it's a rather obscure Mario game.

One thing has started to irk me a little around unfinished episodes. To be specific, it's how the plot and the gameplay are handled. I did mention it briefly in the cringeworthy moments topic, but let me elaborate on it a bit more.
Whenever I look through the Projects forum at said episodes, they tend to have some really exotic plots, but there's a worrying trend that I've started noticing. I know the plot isn't meant to be that important, but if there is a plot, it's usually just "oh yeah, Bowser kidnapped Peach..." or if not, it's often "Some exotic villain (but usually Bowser, or under the control of Bowser) has stolen all the stars!", often with Bowser kidnapping Peach getting thrown into it as well, and the plot concept is sometimes hyped up at the start of playing the episode, yet it's forgone completely by the time you get to world 3 or something. And nearly every single time, stars just have to be integral to the plot. The problem with it is that while stars were introduced as a means of creating Mario 64-style hub worlds, which TGCA and SMSE pulled off really well, but the concept has been run down into the ground too many times to the point where it's just...unoriginal, with stars now being forced down our throats in world map-based episodes. It may work out well in some cases, but most of the time it's just an excuse to maintain the feeling of plot.

Fun thing I learned about game design - the best games rarely start with a plot. I mean, unless it's something like Final Fantasy where the plot is the entire point, games tend to be better when they start with a good GAME, and work a plot around the strengths of it. I think we've got a pretty solid plot for A2XT2, but it wasn't even confirmed what the plot was until 90% of the levels were already made. Now, this is a pretty high extreme of the concept, but it's allowed us to work in the plot to every aspect of the game, rather than just a basic high concept.

I never understand why people want stories in a Mario game.
If you ask me what Mario game had the best story, I would say Mario Must Die.

IMO, SMB3 GFX are one of my least favorite in SMBX. I definitely prefer SMW, SMB2 and SMB1 GFXs.

SMB1 is my least favorite because it's the most archaic.

No they're not, if you're talking about the default ones. The first three games SMBX derives from all released at the same time. If anything, it's Super Mario World that's the oldest.

It's the most archaic (fixed the wording above) and I find its original style to be a real eyesore, and the SMB1-styled vanilla graphics also have fewer aesthetic appeal to me than the other styles (in that case, least favorite =/= actually bad).
