The Wii U is objectively better than the Wii in every possible way, other than its lack of GameCube support. I choose Wii U, of course, and I only use my Wii now for GameCube stuff.

The Wii had better games, and a great shop with a variety of virtual console games. The Wii U, on the other hand, has Miiverse and 1080 HD quality, but I need to get a bit more situated with the Wii U thus far as it's still rather new so I for now vote for the Wii.

this is like asking which "NES" is better:
SNES or NES
And that's quite obvious I have to say.
Once Nintendo gets the hang of what to do with the WiiU, especially the gamepad, it'll be brilliant.

This is a really good comparison. If you discount game libraries, the Wii U is just objectively better. No contest.

The Wii is able to play Gamecube games, but that is all it is useful for now. The Wii U will eventually have gamecube games on the virtual console soon enough(the only issue being that you would have to buy any of the gcn games you played previously on the wii). You can also play wii games on the wii u as well as virtual console games you haven't purchased from the wii u's eshop(you can use the gamepad as a screen, but not as a controller). The downside to virtual console games is that if you plan to play them with the gamepad as a controller from the wii u menu, you will have you pay for it, but luckily at a discount. Best of all is that you don't have to use up the wii u's blocks, as it uses separate memory(a wii-type memory) to store all of your games' progress. In short I vote for the wii u.

One thing that's worth noting is that the Wii U doesn't support GameCube controllers, which a lot of people (including me) really really like. So even if GCN games are released, you'll have to use a newer controller, which is unfortunate but OK. I'll get used to the Pro controller playing Smash 4 anyways.

I'd say Wii, due to Wii U's limited game library as already mentioned (although that will change down the road). Also, my Wii U doesn't read Wii discs in particular, so I still get a lot more use out of my Wii. Still, I really like the Wii U GamePad and console as a concept (in a way it's like a combination of a handheld and home console), and I think it could have a very promising future if some games like NSMBU and 3D World are any indication.

Isn't it kinda obvious that the Wii U and Wii are entirely different game consoles?

Wii U has Miiverse, HD graphics, Nintendo Network support, more blocks for game data etc., a support for Wii U and Wii games, and it looks prettier as well, but that's just my opinion.
The Wii, on the other hand, has a support for GameCube games, and it used to support WiiConnect24. The Wii really only is useful now because of its support for GameCube game discs, controllers and Memory Cards. If you don't have those or have a GameCube as well, I guess you could say the Wii is well outdated by the Wii U.

What the hell did this do, anyways? I heard that term all the time but I don't actually know what it means.

Wikipedia wrote:WiiConnect24 was used to receive content such as Wii Message Board messages sent from other Wii consoles, Miis, emails, updated channel and game content, and notification of software updates. If the Standby Connect mode of WiiConnect24 is enabled, this content can also be received when the Wii is left in standby mode.
The channels that used WiiConnect24, according to Wikipedia, were:
- Mii Channel
- Wii Shop Channel
- Forecast Channel
- News Channel
- Everybody Votes Channel
- Check Mii Out Channel
- Mario Kart Wii Channel
- Nintendo Channel
- Wii Speak Channel
So it was quite an important thing, actually, because many of us used at least one of those channels regularly before the service was shut down last year.
