The story is simple. The koopalings (and Bowser, of course) robbed all the Super Stars. Oh no, Mario and Luigi must collect all the Stars again. Every koopaling have a certain number of stars in their castles
Every koopaling have a Castle whose theme are different. The castle colour, enemies and levels change in each world. The castle works like Super Mario 64 Castle. There are rooms (levels) and 1 or 2 stars in each room. You can chose the koopaling you want face, but you will need a certain number of stars to access the high floors
World 1-Grass and Forest. Boss Larry (50 stars needed to higher floor (Boss Battle in the higher floor).
World 2-Desert. Boss Morton (60 stars).
World 3- Beach. Boss Wendy (70 stars).
World 4- Mountain and Caves. Boss Iggy (80 stars).
World 5- (55 stars needed to access world 5 and next ones) Sky. Boss Iggy (90 stars boss battle).
World 6- Ice mountain. Boss Lemmy (100 stars).
World 7- Volcano. Boss Ludwig (110 stars).
World 8- Space. There is no castle here, only some levels.
World 9- Bowser Lair. You need 130 stars to access the castle and 149 to battle with boss (Bowser, obviously)
In each world, there are cities where you can get items and play bonus levels. You can find stars on this levels. You can access to the Peach Castle (World 1) and Rosalina Castle (World 8)

That depends, really. Some styles work really well together; I do agree on the fact that the style-mixing here isn't particularly brilliant; SMW doesn't really mix well with any other style due to its cartoon-ish shading and spriting.
