A short story from The Witch's House, found in the first library and told as my own variation.

There once was a hunter and his dog; On their way home they met a merchant with a cart full of gold, "Please kind hunter, watch over my cart" the merchant pleaded to which the hunter agreed. Days past since the merchant had left to find a fix for his cart. The hunter, worrying for his ill mother told the dog to watch the cart and went home. When the merchant returned and saw the dog by the cart he gave him a gold coin to return to his master. When the dog went home to the hunter with the gold coin in his mouth, the hunter scowled and screamed "I told you to watch the cart and you steal from it?" The hunter then shot and killed the dog in anger.

The message; Perception
Know all sides of a story before you react.

This "variation" is no different from the original one, as I remember it.
