Warping questions, taking it to another level.

Postby SpectralProjection » Fri Dec 04, 2015 12:47 am

Alright I know most of everything there is to know about warping within a level. I also could probably make the world level to world level warp work (inserting the x, y of the destination which it gives when placing). But I can't find any information on the level to level warps (changing levels without visiting the world scene) or alternative level entrances.
Lets say I had world 1 "the greatest grassy grassland gardens" and it had 5 levels plus one warp pipe level. The warp pipe level was a maze that had one warp pipe for each of the other five levels. Is that possible? Can it be different than the original player start.

I know most of this has to do with the warp 1-100 but with entrance/exit tabs, level entrance only checkbox, and world map xy, and level exit. Maybe something else I'm overlooking. I saw one topic saying you can start a level from a warp, but another say you can level warp.

If someone could help me put this into perspective it would make things run more smoothly. Im one level deep and may have to scrap it depending on the information I get. Keep in mind some levels I will want to have the main default p1/p2 entrance, plus two other entrances. If they cant have the warp pipe animation I could just spawn them on the pipe, maybe? I will want levels to warp to levels and world areas that can both lead to one place, and any limitations would also be useful.

Thx in advance.

You can take a player from a level to another level via warps, that's possible:

Image

The blank field as of where I marked it on the image up there is basically the level link as of where it should take once you use that specific warp (make sure to add .lvl at the end of the level file though) and the bar at the bottom with the sign "Normal Entrance" is as of where your entrance should be once you get to that specific level. "Normal Entrance" is where your original player starting point is placed while everything else like "To Warp 1" it leads you to that specific warp in that linked level. If you want that warp to be entrance only, use "Entrance Only (Can not Enter)" but only recommended if that warp has to be only an entrance warp rather than a regular warp pipe where you can entrance and exit inside it.

Thank you, that clears up that.
Now all I really need to know is if I can do that with world levels, basically having multiple entrances from the world to a particular level.

Yup. Marina and I did that for Summer Takeover. It's definitely possible.

Would someone mind giving me a brief explanation of how to do that? Just to clarify, I'm looking to have certain larger levels with multiple entrances from the world map.
One example would be Toad Town. Let's say on the world map it's represented by the red mushroom level sprite. Then I'd like to have closeby is a pipe level sprite that would start you in Toad Town, but underground. And so on with the other entrance(s).
As an assumption, is the method you used something like...
Having toad town as a level, and toad town underground as another seperate level and then using the level to level warp as explained in bossedit8's earlier post?

You could do that, or just set the toad house so you’ll enter with the normal entrance, then put a warp in the underground section, set it as level entrance and have the pipe level make the player enter with that warp. (to set how the player will enter the level in the world map, just do it in the entrance field)

One thing that your should keep in mind if you do this, by the way, is that all events and such will be reset each time you enter either level, since they're still separate levels.

@rudeguy07 - thanks, I had a feeling I was over thinking it. Although my original version could work to my advantage, at least to keep things simpler, and to help with the section limit. Which, I plan to just create new "sections" within existing sections that would share the same bg/music where you wouldn't see. At any rate thanks again for clarifying.
@psuedo dino - I was 99% sure that was the case, so I already have it planned out to still function properly. The level warps are simply to allow the player into an area within a level they normally couldn't reach from the default entrance. These altrnate entrance areas are simply to allow character specific quests. Say Mario enters and he has to hit a red switch to exit the area, which in turn will unlock other charactet specific quests (maybe via events also so as to not make them all so obvious being red blocks you just switched on. And of course, no other red switch block in the level.
