Slight Question Regarding Paint.NET

Postby silent_ » Sat Feb 15, 2014 3:48 pm

And here it is as followed: How do you make a 2x2 pixel sprite become 8-bit with Paint.NET? I was wondering coz... well... I'm making this crap joke level purposely with eye-bloody graphics. Thanks in advance.

Do you mean just condensing similar colors into one? You could try that by lowering the brightness and increasing the contrast.

Sorry but no, I mean like how the NES SMB1 GFX looked. After changing it to 8-bit, I know how to make the colors look horrible, I'm just anxious to hear about making the GFX simply 8-bit.

I don't think there's any way to "make something 8-bit". You can always look for color palettes that have the colors you want and just recolor the graphics yourself, but there's no such thing as an "8-bit button" or whatever.

You could take a 8-bit sprite sheet, pick colors from it and color similar colors in the 16-bit sprite the same thus taking away colors. An 8-bit sprite has three colors, when a 16-bit one can have ten or similar.

I see what you two are saying and I appreciate the feedback, but how would I make for instance Larry Koopa and make him all colored square pixels instead of 2x2 pixels? That's my prime question that's particularly confusing me.

Maybe the term "colored" threw you off. I meant that instead of a 2x2 pixel SMB3-styled Goomba, how I could change it to 8-bit pixels without struggles.

The pixel size has nothing to do with its bit depth, in this case.

"2x2 pixels" just means that every pixel in the graphic is 2 actual pixels high by 2 actual pixels wide (or, in other words, resized by 200% from the original graphics on the SNES). Unrelated to the colors.

As they both said, there's not easy way to do this with Vanilla Paint.Net. I don't recall if there is a plug-in that can do exactly what you want. The closest thing would be Posterize (found under Adjustments or by pressing Ctrl+Shift+P), which produces effects like this:
npc-122 poster.gif
npc-8 poster.gif

That tab satisfies me perfectly, I appreciate the help. This could be locked whenever now.
