I think there should be a profile field that you should fill out at registration to show how people found this forum whether it was at random, through an affiliate, or something else.

This actually is interesting if it's done correctly by the members themselfes... what I mean by that if the members do use 'em correctly and not giving out any wrong informations like that and such.

This actually doesn't sound like a bad idea. I'd like to hear what Joey has to say about it.

What would we do with the information gained from this field?

It wouldn't necessarily be a need, but it'd be nice to see how members have found the forums.

Well a couple things but the reason I had in mind while writing this was keeping track of which affiliates/sites people are coming from the most, and reaching out more to said affiliate/site. Anybody could do whatever they want with the information to help the forum though, so don't just ask me it's pretty open ended.

EDIT: For me I found the forums were back up through YouTube so I would enter "YouTube" in the field and if a lot of people were coming from YouTube, we could get more serious about the community channel or encourage more people to post in the SMBX Videos thread. Just an example, it's really up to whoever is interpreting the information and what they want to do with it.

I think this is useless, but imo it would be better to exist as a one thread, so everyone can post there how they discovered this place.

This. I agree with Aeromatter, it would be nice to know so we could reach out, but some people's reasons might be too long for a profile field.

Like I said before, I think this would be something nice to have. However, we need to see what Joey has to say.

Added it. This will display upon registration and is a required field, and it will also display on user's profile pages. I've decided that it's best if it doesn't appear on posts.

The "One of our affiliates" option is kind of vague since it doesn't specify which affiliate where the bulk of traffic is coming from. I'll take it though, thx for adding this.

My concern is that we can not type out what it reall is! None of them was true for me. I was just googling a wag to play Mario games online when I was inbetween sixth and seventh grade (about six years ago) I ended up downloading it since it looked coll at the time!

Well, the Google field is more suited for "I came here as a result of searching the internet for level editors".

I suppose I could just make it an open field; that may solve the affiliate issue too because people will probably just say "SMWCentral" or wherever they were linked from as opposed to "an affiliate".

Not quite what I meant! I did not search for a level editor! I was looking for a Mario game to play, not a way to make one!

It says Google/Search Engine, i.e. (meaning for example) searching for a Mario editor. So really, it works even if you were searching for Mexican takeout and for some reason this site showed up and you clicked on it.

"i.e." does not mean "for example"; you can think of it as meaning "in essence" (see here for details).

It doesn't work if you were searching for Mexican takeout because searching for that isn't searching for a Mario level editor.
