Apple's Keynote 2015

I didn't get to see all of it, but I got what matters. I'd like to talk about things I liked and didn't like, and also one dumb argument that everyone keeps using that I'd like to dismiss right now.

1st: the dumb argument

"*shows video of Steve Job's 2007 keynote talking about the iPhone and 'who wants a stylus'* LEL APPLE WENT BACK ON THEIR WORD XDDD"

No, stop right there.
At that time, touch screens were primarily operated with stylus' and that was the most precise way to operate them, via a resistive touch screen (now, I might be getting resistive and capacitive mixed up and if I do please correct me). Steve Jobs was making a blow at those types of screens. This new Apple Pencil is not a primary form of interacting, it's completely optional and does have its use cases.

That now leads me into things I do and don't like.

Do like.
-6s and 6s+:
-Force touch on the iPhone is genius
-new camera's bound to be drop dead gorgeous
-that processor will probably rip through most basic iPhone tasks and even be a great professional phone too
-(Not talking about price) iPad pro's screen is (from what I hear) gorgeous and is going to be a great media consumption device

Don't like.
-100$ for a stylus. What the fuck, also it's form of charging is just dumb and bound to break easily.
-160$ for a keyboard cover. Again, why. I'll go into more detail about this later.
-The iPad itself is like 800$. Upgrade the storage, add on all accessories, and you're getting into MacBook Pro territory, and you can't even do any "real" computing on it. I mean yeah, you can edit videos in iMovie and things like that. Wanna code? Nope. Photoshop? Nope. Premiere? Nope. Why even bother? At the very least, the Surface Pro series runs an x86_x64 chip and runs a desktop operating system. You could do those things on it if you wanted to, you have that option. iPad? No, strictly App Store apps. Kinda disappointing.

Anyways, let's discuss. And let's have a real discussion not just "Apple sucks period". No, spark some actual discussion.

The Apple Pencil segment was really something. You have an overblown stylus for $100 and when it was first displayed it got applause. Fucking applause, literally "Apple: You'll buy it anyway."

The only interesting thing I've heard so far is the force touch which could diversify mobile gaming.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much all of your pros and cons, Axiom. Styluses are nice, they're very precise and make stuff like gaming a lot better. I definitely appreciate its inclusion, although it's definitely rather overpriced. I feel like it won't be as successful as they hope.

I top keked so much.
Force touch is cool, I experienced it on the new MacBook 2015 and it's definitely convincing. Going beyond the convincing touchpad clicks, I agree with you Ghostie that it could really diversify mobile gaming and UI interaction.

Maybe when the 2nd gen apple stylus comes out...lmao

You do realize the sequel to the stylus could also cost more because of that, right? :D

Now, as someone who does not use mobile technology like this, I just find the concept of a customized/exclusive stylus to be ridiculous. Just a simple interchangeable stylus in any color should do on a good mobile device. It wouldn't be quality if you absolutely needed an exclusive one.

well yeah you can put it in either way because it's a lightning connector, those are reversible. however, what happens when someone accidentally moves it up too far, say for example, you're charging your stylus and doing something super quick holding your ipad upright in landscape, someone walks by and hits it. boom. busted stylus, busted charging port.

Mhm, I think this would be so much more successful if Apple decided to make their devices a little more compatible with outside programs like Photoshop. Then their worth would live up to their prices.

I don't follow the company or care for it in any way (maybe it's because of this GEN4 iPod I'm currently using to type on, which is a piece of shit, may I add). I do think the stylus is a nice nod towards a little bit of respect from me. Next, make them a little more compatible with outsider programs.

Ugh, the GEN4 iPod. I feel your pain :/ I dunno about this outside compatiblity, I doubt Photoshop or SMBX or other things that require a mouse will ever work well on mobile. Force touch is great and all, but it's not going to make pixel art on mobile devices any easier. I'll be sticking to a computer for now.

if adobe put photoshop on iOS then yes, there's a good chance they could use the Pencil APIs to add support for it. So again, kind of an invalid argument.

What would be really nice is if Apple released like $150-200 full on drawing tablet that came with the Apple Pencil for use exclusively on the iPad, but you also have a lightning/Thunderbolt drawing tablet that could also work on say older iPhones or Macs. THAT would be cool.

SnifitGuy wrote:I agree. Why have two different OSs for desktop and Mobile? Make one that is cross-platform compatible (imaging putting OSX on your Xbox One) between the Apple computers and the tablets/smartphones.
most companies do that..?
iOS and OS X share the same kernel, their app structures are similar. iOS is just a lot more sandboxed, and there's no denying that iOS is a pretty secure mobile operating system because of this.
