The Last King of Hyrule

The dark wizard Ganondorf, seeking to conquer Hyrule, vowed to put an end to the Hylian bloodline. Wielding the Triforce of Power, he took it upon himself to end the royal family once and for all. Princess Zelda is already dead, and the king is slain before Link's own eyes. This will be the Last King of Hyrule.

The pieces of the Triforce of Courage have been scattered to prevent Ganondorf from seizing them. Link, drawn by their essence of courage, must reforge it from its shards in order to face Ganondorf.

The kingdom is already lost. The royal bloodline has been ended. Waves of evil wash over Hyrule as Ganondorf's armies try to find the pieces of the Triforce before Link. Ganondorf, fortified in the Dark World beyond anyone's reach, has achieved absolute power. The situation is utterly hopeless.

Yet as he obtains the strength of the Triforce of Courage, Link presses on into this hopless situation regardless.

The Last King of Hyrule is a Zelda game created with SMBX as a collaborative effort by a group of fifteen users at rpgmaker.net. It stars Link as the only playable character, and uses Zelda 2 graphics and classic Zelda sound effects, with 8-bit remixes of music from later Zelda games. It uses a modified version of the SMBX engine - it won't play properly if you copy the files into the normal version of SMBX. Supports 1 or 2 players.

Hooray! King Harkinian is in this!

I might play it later, but judging from the screenshots you all did a nice job, regardless of clash.

Edit: Just realized that he dies in this. Now who will wonder what's for dinner!?

The kings subjects would be too worried about scrubbing his remains off the floors of Hyrule to wonder about that!

I'm one of the level designers of this game, by the way. I made the Dark Woods, Sand Trap, Darkworld Cave, Lake Hylia, and Fire Temple levels.

You guys did a great job with this game. I'm currently trying to beat the Sky Temple.

How did you replace the SMBX website with that picture in the startup menu? I'd like to try your technique of packaging a modified version of the original game folder for my Harry Potter project. ^_^

This looks really fun, though I can't help but wonder: What exactly did you change in your modified version of SMBX?

I used a hex editor, the URL for the splash page is on line 31A30. I strongly recommend linking directly to an 800x600 gif image.

Honestly the only reason I did so was because of the splash page errors in SMBX 1.3, where it tries to open a page that no longer exists. I think SMBX 1.3.0.1 fixes this issue by pointing to the new website instead, but we started The Last King of Hyrule before the new version was released.

In addition to the modified splash page, I also used the hex editor to change "You need 6 stars to continue" to "You need 6 Triforce pieces". And we also replaced a ton of sound and graphics files to give the game as much of a Zelda feel as possible. Sound files can't be changed without distributing the whole engine, and we put many of our graphics files in the base engine folders instead of the episode folder to reduce the file size of the download.

The URL for the website shown by the splash page starts on line 00031A30. Replace it with a different URL. It has to be exactly the same length as the original URL.

If your URL is too short, you can make it longer by adding a ? or # symbol followed by random gibberish to the end of it. If it's too long, host it at imgur.com, they have really short URLs and allow direct hotlinking to image files.

I think I got it! If I want to change anything else (Like say, the title displayed in the window, or the message that tells you how many stars/Triforce pieces I need), do those lines have to have the exact same number of characters too?

EDIT: I did exactly what you said, but I keep getting runtime errors!!

We really needed a Zelda themed episode.
There are simply to many with the same thing: Bowser kidnapps Peach.
I wish that there were more episode that don't include the Mario series.

Wow, i'm so far in the Dark world, the story is very nice and I love how the game is so uniquely different than other episodes.

It's a very good pull.

What I meant was that we have all this other video game stuff rather then Mario.
In fact, it's usually Mario music and Kirby music used in SMBX, not that much Zelda, Metroid or Kid Icarus (I don't think it's music is needed) music used.
