Sednaiur wrote:Thank you for your kind words. I always try to put all effort into my stuff, but let's see if this is enough, when I release that .exe ^^. There is not too much left to do. Only the "Mario", "Luigi" etc names for the vs mode, the worldmap background (the one that displays the current data about stars, the levels name etc), the loadingscreen (the one which tells about buying a Wii U and stuff) needs to be replaced with new GFX. And I also still need to change the cheat codes and the splash screen, so one cannot cheat anymore (except stuff like 2 player, framerate, speed devil etc.).
Okay, I like this! Does that mean Peach, Toad, and Link will be playable in your project since I see Link up their? This looks nice! How do you remove a cheat code though?

I don't plan to have Toad and Peach playable in my project, and Link is another thing. I just testplayed my project with him yesterday and unfortunately you cannot finish some levels with him. But I still update everything possible in terms of hardcoded GFX (at least all what makes sense), so one could use the .exe also outside of my project. I don't like half-done stuff, so I just do all of it :-).
About the cheats, I will not remove them, but alter their names, what I do by hex-editing. I already changed the splashscreen, which is now a link to this forum (I still use SMBX version 1.3.0.0 instead of 1.3.0.1). Also, as far as I have seen, I could even alter the NPC-codes, meaning instead of having "gfxheight=" and "gfxwidth=" I could use something like "xgfx=" and "ygfx=", but I am not sure if a change in the codes would really affect that, and I am not too sure about trying out ^^.

Oh, okay. Does that mean you will be doing a custom playable for all five of them! That is good for me! Also, that is good to know, but would you at least keep tract of what the new cheats would be? or you can just change the secret cheat to something no one would guess, so it brings back the mystery and the fact "No saving after cheating" again! ...but either way, this looks nice, and I can not wait to 100% let's play this, or even co-op it! Glad you like it, although I've just noticed that I forgot to place a few things like hearts (mushrooms) and cherries (blue coins)...
And yes, the boss is just Mouser, but I'm gonna try to make his fight a bit more interesting.

Maybe a moving platform on chains with those electric things(like fuzzies but not fuzzies)going around it?Is this castle/warehouse in a difficult or easy/simple world?

After more work, I could finish almost all the hardcoded GFX for the SMBX.exe now:
P.S: I dont know what is wrong with the pictures, but it seems that postimage has some screw-up on their site, as it only gives out the preview-URLs for the pictures, instead of the hotlink-URLs -.-For some reason I needed to re-upload the images - everything works fine now!
The loading screen really took some hours to do, also Toads blue name plate was a pain to do, because it always was 2 bits too big, no matter what I edited xD. Only the worldmap-background and some pointers are left now.
What I will not do, are the colored gloves, the editor-item icons (blocks, BGOs, NPCs) or other stuff like that. They cannot hold enough colors because their filesize becomes too big otherwise, so it makes no sense for me to do them :-/.
Also, I didn't know that there are such nice battle levels pre-installed in SMBX. Since I am not able to play with someone else, I never checked for the battle levels before.

What I will do for sure, is a revamped Mario and Luigi, but I will see if I do Peach, Toad, and Link. For now I really do not know about them.
And for the cheats, it would not make much sense to tell you their new names xD. But do not worry, as I will not change cheats like "framerate", "donthurtme", "speeddemon", and the like. Only the really evil ones get changed. I may reveal them to people who completed my episode, though.
Also, I cannot change the hidden cheat, because it is somewhat change-protected (cannot be located), so this is not an option.

Looks beautiful, liking these player 'logos' very much (or even way too much). Splash screen is also neat.

I understand with the change protected part! So I guess it is to much for a Rosalina version of the game, but this is nice! I will use that when it is out for a lot more then your episode! My request that you do when you do the princess is that you edit from my fixed version instead of the original since the original has six broken frames! Are you able to change the "Mario Game" and the like graphics?

Okay then - it looks like I am finally done with hacking the hardcoded graphics of the SMBX.exe:
What I have edited:
The splash screen now shows links to this forum, like version 1.3.0.1 does (I edited version 1.3.0.0 of the SMBX.exe)
The loading screen (everything is now 1x1 pixels and the Wii-logo got replaced by a new Wii U-logo made by me)
The SMBX-logo and curtains (it is now transparent and can be replaced with BGOs that resemble a new logo)
The main menu-font (it is now 1x1 pixeled and also has shading, a color and a metallic style)
The ingame-font (it is now 1x1 pixeled and somewhat HD)
The worldmap background and it's font (the font is now 1x1 pixeled and restyled)
The ingame-textboxes (a simple change of color and style)
The ingame-HUD (the star counter, coin counter/rupee counter, Links bomb counter, Links key symbol and the point counter are now 1x1 pixeled, and the item boxes/hearts are restyled)
The names Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Link in the two player battle (they are restyled and colored in the corresponsive player's colors, also the "wins"-message is restyled like that)
The only thing that keeps me from releasing the .exe, is that I need to put it into somekind of installer, so it comes to you like the original SMBX does.... and I am so experienced with that, like a amoeba with quantum physics ^^.
Also, I didn't get what the message at the end of the SMBX credits means up to this day. Does it even make sense? Who are the "collosians" and why is there a measure (1:13) told?
MECHDRAGON777 wrote:My request that you do when you do the princess is that you edit from my fixed version instead of the original since the original has six broken frames! Are you able to change the "Mario Game" and the like graphics?
Thanks for the suggestion, I consider it ^^.
About the "Mario Game", do you mean the font or the text itself? In case of the font, I just completed that :-P. But in case of the text itself, I don't think so, because of the limitations - I would need to edit "00"-positions, which is not allowed as far as I know. It could crash the .exe then.

It's a quote from Bible, actually. And that "Collosians 1:13" is a scripture in Bible for that quote. Dunno why it's in SMBX, but... it's there.
Great work on making new exe, though.

All if those screens just look plesent! What I mean, is it possible to say "Rosalina" instead of "Peach" and is it possibe to say "Daisy" instead of "Peach"
That is what I meant.
Also, I loke the effect of the background for the world map very much so, simce I like soace and it hads a bit more flare! (Level Name)
Suggestion
---------------------
Why not add "Status and points" at the top?

I'd approve of this under one condition:
If you resprited everything to look like something from the New Super Mario Bros series.
Because ARGH it just hurts me so much, why would you remove the retro look from a retro game? And don't say something like "eh but it's still pixel art" because while that may be true, it's some of the worst pixel art I've ever seen.
Sorry for rambling here, but I just can't comprehend why you would need to use a billion colours for everything in a 16x16 (or 32x32) tile based game. It's just ugly, especially taking into consideration problems like banding and making it harder to find a decent palette.
See, if you use a lot of colours, one thing you most certainly won't sell your stuff as is pixel art. And one thing you REALLY want to avoid is black outlines. I'm looking at your Toad House thing right now and honestly think that the outline clashes with the house itself. Use a warm, dark brown, or different colours depending on the adjacent colour.
I mean yeah I can see why people would like this but, to me it's just ugly all things considered. Please consider making sprites for different kinds of games. I'm pretty sure a handdrawn indie game with your sprites would look gorgeous, but this is just wrong. It's trying to bring a hyperrealistic look to a field which doesn't need it by any means. It's like pouring milk into your Dr. Pepper drink. What are you doing, maniac! That doesn't even taste well!

His goal is obviously to match the style of his own smbx project, so none of your objections are relevant; for all intents and purposes, he is constructing an indie game, insomuch as all of the art is his own. But I also don't get why it matters if his sprites match your arbitrary definition of "pixel art." It's all consistent with his own style so who cares?
