SmashTales (a Smash Bros-related story)

Postby Ecruteak » Mon Jul 06, 2015 8:02 am

This is a story I've been working on. I'm posting it here, if that's OK. The name is based off DuckTales and revolves around my Smash Bros. mains: Toon Link, Mr. Game and Watch and Lucina. Enjoy, and please provide feedback! How can I improve? What have I done well?

Main Characters
Spoiler: show
Toon Link- A bright little guy who looks a lot like Link. He has an energetic personality and his nicknames are “Toon” and “Link”.
Mr. Game and Watch- A quirky man who moves in a very peculiar way. He is two-dimensional, which he uses to his advantage by slipping in between cracks and scaring others by facing the victim side-on. His nickname is “Watch”. He speaks in Game & Watch noises, but everyone understands him anyway. (So that’s why he speaks normally in this story.)
Lucina- A lazy yet intelligent and clumsy pessimist who is the regular victim of Watch’s “surprises”. She really only enjoys reading, sword training and the occasional video game. She is friends with Toon and Watch, but she rarely shows it.
Chapter 1: The Morning
Spoiler: show
“Wake up, Lucina!”
Toon Link and Mr. Game and Watch were standing at the side of Lucina’s bed, trying to get her to wake up.
“Toon, poke him!” Mr. Game and Watch blipped out. Toon Link extended his finger and poked Lucina’s shoulder. She grunted and rolled over.
“Don’t worry, Toon, I have an idea,” Watch said, holding his bell. He moved it close to Lucina’s ear and rang it.
“HOLY CRAP!”
Watch and Toon were looking at the ceiling, where they found that Watch’s bell had shocked Lucina so much that she literally jumped a few feet out of her bed and was now holding onto the ceiling fan.
“Guys, what the HELL was that for?!” Lucina growled, looking down at the boys.
“We’re late for Smash practice! All the other people have gotten ready and met at the Battlefield!” Toon replied, smiling. Lucina sneered, let go of the fan and fell onto the bed. It creaked loudly under her weight as she slid off.
“Awwww, we had one yesterdaaaaaaayyy!” she said, groaning.
“Don’t be lazy! Eat this toast and meet us at the Battlefield!” Watch said, extending his hand where he was holding a piece of plain toast. Lucina took the toast, muttered a word of thanks and ate it.

“What’d I miss?” Lucina asked Toon, running to the Battlefield and almost slipping on some water. By the looks of it, she hadn’t missed much, but she asked just to be sure.
“Um, you only missed out on how to use a Smash Ball. I’m pretty sure that if we came this far, we know how to use them,” Toon said, shooting a look at Mario, the teacher, who was demonstrating his Final Smash to the onlookers. He shot a barrage of fireballs to one side of the Battlefield to applause and cheering.
“It’s hardly impressive,” Lucina said, looking over and watching Luigi use his Poltergust 5000 to suck balloon people up, which she assumed to be his Final Smash.
“OH! MY TURN, MY TURN!” Watch cried, running to Mario and begging him to show off his Final Smash.
“Oh, alright,” Mario huffed, handing the Smash Ball to Watch. He broke it open and turned into an octopus, chasing a startled Kirby around the Battlefield as King Dedede watched, laughing. Watch started to chase him, too.
“Alright, that’s enough. Watch, get over here,” Toon called out, grabbing an LCD tentacle and pulling him over. The Final Smash wore off and Toon was pulling Watch along by a single leg.
“Ow, your sides are sharp, Watch!” Toon said, rubbing his hands. Mr. Game and Watch was 2D, so his sides were bound to be sharp. Watch replied by choppily nodding. The three of them started talking about nothing in particular, until they heard a whistle.
“Alright, pair up! I want to see you guys practice your Final Smashes!” Mario called out through a megaphone. Watch ran off to find another one of his friends, Pac-Man, so that left Lucina and Toon to partner up.
“Ugh, go easy on me, okay?” Lucina said, looking worried. Toon laughed and broke open one of the provided Smash Balls.
“You ready? Brace yourself!” Toon said, grinning. Before Lucina could even reply, Toon created a Triforce shape around her and started swiping his sword. After a few hits, he smashed her upwards, causing Lucina to hit the screen and slide down. When she respawned, she looked mad.

“I told you to go easy on me!” Lucina said through bared teeth. Toon replied by shaking his head and knocking one of the Smash Balls to her with his sword.
“Time to change fate!”
“Hah, you missed!”
Lucina had missed her target. Instead of hitting Toon, she shot herself into a Blast Zone instead.
“YOU WEREN’T SUPPOSED TO JUMP!” Lucina yelled, starting to lose control of her anger.
“Whoa, whoa. Caaaaaalm yourself,” Mario said. He had come to see how they were doing. “But, yes, Toon Link, you weren’t meant to avoid her Final Smash. Try again.”
Toon smashed another ball over to Lucina, grinning. She broke it open yet again.
“Time to change fate!”
Toon flew into a Blast Zone and respawned. He looked dizzy upon rearrival.
“Was that so hard?” Lucina said, tucking her sword away. Toon coughed.
“Alright, good lesson, guys! You’re dismissed,” Mario said, to which everyone ran back to their dormitories.
Chapter 2: Things Get Stranger
Spoiler: show
On the way back to the dormitories, Watch, Toon and Lucina were talking about the lesson they just had.
“So, so, I turned into an octopus and I extended my tentacles and HIT Pac-Man!” Watch said.
“But then he turned huge and ate you back. Big deal,” Toon shot back, rubbing his head. Being shot into a blast zone was painful in itself, let alone being sent there by a sword.
“Yeah, yeah. So what happened with you two?” Watch asked, folding his arms. Lucina covered Toon’s mouth before he could brag about his Final Smash and how she got mad at him.
“So we both used our Final Smashes, no big deal, but it would’ve been better if Toon didn’t DODGE it-“ Lucina started angrily, but was cut off by Watch.
“Hey, what’s that?”
The three of them immediately stopped talking and their eyes snapped to where Watch was pointing. It was a crack in the wall at the side of their dormitory!
“Hey, Watch, didn’t I tell you not to practice your Judge move on our dorm?” Toon asked, half-laughing but half-serious.
“No, I practiced on Lucina. I don’t know what that crack is,” Watch replied while Toon laughed because of the comment he made about practicing on Lucina. She shot him the “Look of Death” and he immediately stopped laughing.
“Let’s bomb it!” he said, pulling a bomb out. Lucina opened her mouth to protest, but by the time she had finished her sentence (“TOON IF YOU BREAK THE DORM WALL, I SWEAR…”), the wall was broken down and instead of the interior of their dorm, they saw a glowing purple portal.
“Cool!” Watch and Toon said simultaneously, but as they started to head into it, they heard a voice behind them.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you two.”
They turned and saw… no-one.
“Come on, Lucina, stop playing,” Toon said, heading for the portal again.
“Well I don’t sound like the ghost of a two-year-old. And that’s what I heard,” she replied coldly.
“Come on, you’re coming with us,” Watch said, grabbing Lucina’s arm, and before she could protest, they went into the portal.

On the portal’s other side, they found… their house?
“Ohhhh, silly me, that’s the purple towel with a portal on it that I hung here to cover the crack I made when I used the Judge move on Lucina!” Watch said, observing the towel.
“Wait, wait, wait. What?” Toon said.
“Oh, I tried out Judge, and I got a 9. So I ended up knocking Lucina from the living room to this wall,” Watch replied, looking at Lucina who shot him back with an annoyed face. She clearly remembered the incident and she wished that she could forget it.
“SO YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT YOU BLEW UP THE SIDE OF OUR DORM FOR NO REASON?!” she shouted at them.
“Well, in my defence, I didn’t know about the crack. And when I saw the portal, I got excited. Don’t yell at me!” Toon replied sadly.
They all started arguing when they heard a noise in one of the rooms at the back of the dorm.
“I volunteer Lucina to investigate,” Watch said, raising an arm, and Toon did the same. Lucina growled at them and stormed off to the back of the dorm. A few minutes later, they heard a strange noise.
“GUYS, WHAT THE HELL DID YOU DO HERE?!” Lucina shouted to them. When the two guys arrived to where Lucina was (the bathroom), she showed them the sink. There was a tube of toothpaste that was slowly emptying its contents into the sink, which was plugged and at the brim. Lucina had turned off the faucet and was reaching in to unplug the sink.
“Whoops, I must’ve done something wrong!” Toon said. Him and Watch watched Lucina fiddling around in the sink when she started to get pulled in.
“Oh, cool, a real portal!” Watch exclaimed. He ran over to the sink and jumped in, followed by Toon and when she finally was sucked in, she joined them.
NEW! Chapter 3- Dimension of Mystery
Spoiler: show
“Ughhhhh…”
Toon pulled his head out of the ground (which appeared to be made of extra-soft clouds) and shook it. He got up and started walking around.
“Watch? Lucina?”
His voice echoed through the foggy cloud land.
“This isn’t funny!”
He heard nothing but his own footsteps. He stopped after a short while in front of what seemed to be a sticker on the floor.
“Watch! There you are!” Toon said, pulling Watch to his feet. Watch choppily shook his head and rubbed it.
“Ugh, what happened? My head’s spinning,” he said. “And by the way, where’s Lucina?”
Toon started to shrub when they heard a yell in the distance.
“STAY BACK! DON’T COME ANY CLOSER!”
Toon and Watch ran over to find Lucina brandishing her sword against a large shadow. It seemed to be biting at her and she was in danger of having her sword bitten to pieces.
“We should go help her,” Toon said, pulling his own sword out of its scabbard. Watch sighed and followed him!
“HEY! YOU! SHADOW MONSTER!” Toon shouted before anyone could stop him. It immediately stopped biting at Lucina and instead turned its head straight away. Toon drew his bow and arrow and aimed it high at the shadow’s head. He released the arrow, but it simply got swallowed in shadow and the monster roared so loudly that the three fighters jumped repeatedly for about a second. Lucina scrambled to her feet and the three ran in the opposite direction, not looking back.

After a while of running, the three came across a town area. The buildings were badly cracked but otherwise intact.
“Man, this place is strange. Let’s leave,” Toon said.
“That’s the problem, we can’t. So it looks like we’re just going to have to persevere and look for an exit,” Watch replied. Toon shook is head and the three of them continued walking, until an alarm sounded when one of them tried to enter one of the buildings.
“I was hungry!” Lucina yelled before running off with Toon and Watch.
“In here!” a voice told them. The three did not have to be told twice, so they ran into the deserted-looking storeroom. They stood just behind the door, panting heavily. They took a moment to survey the room.
“Wow, this place is dirty,” Watch said. He was shot a sharp look by a hooded man who was on the phone, which shut him up.

After about an hour in the building, they heard some bangs on the door, which seemed so rickety that it seemed to be in danger of falling off, even without the pounding.
“Hide!” the hooded man half-whispered, half-yelled to the three. They ran upstairs and the man opened the door.
“Hello! Yes, they’re just upstairs,” he told someone unknown. They held their breaths as footsteps pounded up the stairs.
“Get the door!” Watch whispered to Lucina. She dived for the door, but too late, as the door swung open to reveal a woman brandishing a wand.
“Ready?” she said, as the three looked around nervously at each other.
More chapters coming soon!
(Please try not to annoy me because the character personalities aren't how they are in their actual games, but I feel like I should give them personalities to better fit the story.)
